"Beer" Ale Porter Stout etc

Postby Arama86n on Tue Sep 03, 2013 2:03 pm

So

I'm hoping I'm not the only person on CC that likes beer? O:)

I was at "Ɩl Republiken" this evening, which is a pub in Gothenburg that's taken over the premises which used to belong to the Belgian beer chain Delirium. When it was Delirium they used to have 2000+ beer. Now they only have 800+ ;)
(Walk in fridge)

I saw something from a brilliant Welch brewery BrewDog I hadn't tried... Waimea.
To try and put this one into words gentlemen... I'll leave it to better men that me.

Excuse me while I head out again.

Discuss ;)

Mmmm beer! I've been hoping to try some of Brew Dog's beers at some point, but I haven't seen any in the states. I hadn't heard about Waimea. Based on ABV and IBUs, as well as malt bill, it looks like a pretty typical IPA. It does look like the Waimea hop variety is pretty high alpha acid (14.9% the one place I saw), which can result in a pretty harsh hoppiness. I like my IPAs with huge hop flavor but with a well-balanced smoother taste and finish.

Believe it or not, Delerium Tremens was my wife's gateway beer. She didn't care for beer for a long time, though she made a point of tasting whatever I was drinking. She did start to like the ultra-sweet fruity Lindemann's lambic beers, but after tasting Tremens, she's been hooked on most Belgian beers and has started liking a few others as well, though mostly the high ABV beers (Scottish Wee Heavy and Belgian Strong Dark/Golden in particular).

I don't know if we have any bars in Alabama with >800 beers, though we do have a few that are in the 300+ range. I like beer. :)

[sigh] I live in a small town, where "beer" comes in a can labeled "Bud" or "Coors".... best I can hope for is some St Paul or maybe a Samuel Adams.

I do remember some local brews in college, though...

I just tried Moa Original recently and was pretty impressed. A premium lager that actually has flavour is always nice.

Havent had a decent craft beer session in a while; need to find someone to drink with :P

(edit: its pretty widespread so you may stumble accross it in some of the bigger craft beer places - certainly worth a taste).

I'm a big fan of beer. My favourites are in the style of strong IPA's. The best examples are always from very small breweries (I think mostly because there isn't a large enough market for anyone to be able to make money brewing them large-scale). The best I've ever had were made by a man named Greg Nash, brewed for a pub called The Hart & Thistle in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada The make beer on such a small scale that they don't even bottle any of it (it's available in-house only), and they never have the same selection available. The best ones were all 8-11% ABV, and well over 100 IBU (one particularly sharp example topped 200).

My day-to-day beers though, tend to be cheaper lagers and ales.

I love me a good Porter or Stout. I'm a big fan of wheat beers, and craft beers. One of the most awesome beers I've had was in England from a brewery called Cropton, the beer was Blackout Porter, which was just incredibly delicious. My go-to beers are Killians and Newcastle Brown Ale. Beer is just awesome, I love trying new beers everywhere I go.

Bollocks.

+1. Everytime I go on a trip, I refer to http://beermapping.com/ to map out what bars/brewpubs to visit. My wife just chuckles now when I rule out vacation destinations based on an absence of good brewpubs to visit! :D

Timminz,

Brewster's brew pub is good for food and beer. You can get a sample tray and also buy it in bottles, to-go.

Co-op liquer stores are not bad for selection. Willow park and a place on 17th probably have the best selection but are pricey. Crowfoot also has a good selection and is pricey.

Love Brewsters, although their brew is a bit pedestrian for my tastes. Co-op has the best selection I've ever seen (especially with Scotch), and some great sales on beer.

The best place I've found so far is Craft Beer Market on 10th Ave. Hundreds of different kegs on the go, and always something sharp and hoppy, just like I like. It's a bit pricey, but the beer selection is unmatched around here (as far as I know), and the food is also phenomenal.

I've never made it to Craft. Sounds pretty good. I used to be a real huge stout fan I seem to be in a lager mode last couple years for some reason.

I think you would like to check out the scotch at Crowfoot, some times the prices are not bad on their sale deals. Typically they are high.

Have you been to Zyn.ca? They have a good beer selection claiming over 1000. It's just off 9th ave SE in a building the brewery built as an aquarium in the seventies.

Craft is awesome! They have locations in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. I highly recommend.

I will have to check this place out next month after I start getting paychecks again. Unfortunately, the Scotch budget is one of the first things to go when times are lean.

Hmmm. never heard of this before. I may have to check it out. Google tells me it's on 10th ave @ 17th ave SE. WTF Calgary?! Avenues aren't supposed to cross.

Alexander Keith's Red Amber is my favourite. Their India Pale is what got me off of Labatt Blue and Molson Canadian when I was in my early 20's (also became my screen name...)

But I try all kinds. Here is a picture of my bar before I moved.

Image

It is filled with full bottles of beer I have tried over the years. Started collecting about 7 years ago. Many, many more that couldn't fit on my wall and are in storage. Waiting to buil myself a new bar before displaying them again.

Some of my favouritesfrom outside of Canada have been..

Tusker - from Kenya
Fiddlers Elbow - United Kingdom
Rogue Dead Guy Ale - USA
Anchor Steam - USA

Some Canadian favourites...

Alexander Keith's (pretty much all varieties, except for White)
Muskoka Cream
Mill Street Wheat
Molson Export (an oldie, but still good)

I have fairly simple beer tastes. Yuengling Lager most of the time. If I'm going "not cheap" I'm doing Dogfish Head's Midas Touch.

I'm not a big fan of IPAs. I prefer stouts and porters. I do like Heffeweissen and highly recommend Old Rasputin.

9 th ave goes south in Englewood because of the river. Later they built the avenues going East/West. That was actually downtown originally.

yup yup Old Rasputin is pretty delicious.

I, too, generally pick stouts and porters. But brown ales are pretty great, too. I like IPAs. The Total Domination IPA from Ninkasi is probably my favorite IPA. Arrogant Bastard for a nice meal.

I generally drink wine. I don't drink beer often because when I do, and when it's good, it's like a love affair. I can't drink good beer fast (well a wheat beer I consume at a standard rate) because I enjoy drinking it slowly. We have a number of local beers around where I live. Even when I go to other places I love to try their brew pubs. (True fact, great chefs always seem to hide in brewpubs; the food is great also!)

I have also noticed this. Places that carry really good beer, also tend to serve really good food. Even my wife (not at all a beer drinker) tends to prefer a good brew pub over other types of restaurants.

Or maybe the good beer makes the food taste better...

I generally drink anything that isn't cheap or have some sort of fruit in it: Id drink wine if I wanted fruit. But also an IPA guy, though upstate NY doesn't really offer too much unique taste besides for the no-name microbrews, and those are hit and miss. Am pretty close to the Ommegang brewery near Cooperstown, they do pretty good all-around.

Also feel the need to share - Tried a Stone Chipotle Smoked Porter the other night because it sounded different. Was by far the worst beer Ive ever had. Was basically a dark porter which someone spilled an ENTIRE bottle of hot sauce in. I like spicy, not in my beer.

I prefer stouts and then porters, depending on the day. usually settle for guiness, but prefer sierra nevada which was voted in the top ten on some list.

The rest on the list were hard to get, but want to try the obsidion which is available only on the west coast.

Yesterday beer wasnt on the menu, but cliquot for brunch, and then a few 18yr McCallen for a nightcap....hard to beat that

Reminds me of the Jalepeno Ale, one of the breweries back home made about ten years back. It was terrible! Like bland beer, with an increasingly hot aftertaste. The heat wasn't immediate enough to properly associate it with each sip, so the first reaction was usually to take another sip to quench the fire.
