New NHL season

Postby Gillipig on Thu Sep 26, 2013 9:01 am

Okay all you Canadian muts, I know you're the only ones who really care about this so I'm directing my question to you, why are we Swedes so good? I repeat, why are we so awesome?? And why will we win the olympic gold next year? I know it will happen so don't argue with me on that.

The Swedes are good because they've been looking up to the Canadians, trying to emulate us, for so long that it's starting to bring real results.

In other news, I now live in an NHL city, and have acquired tickets to see my first ever game.

Thirdly, Go Leafs!

Swedes tend to play a more Canadian game than a European, but with less physicality. If you watch Russia, they barely dump and chase the puck. Canadians and Americans love doing that. Finland always relies on their great goaltending, and the czechs are good because I have no idea. Swedes won't win gold, but still.

Looking forward to the NHL season though. More goals this year with the smaller goalie pads.

You do realize how large geographically Canada is...don't you? Not all of us live in an NHL city. Getting in a car and driving (in my case) 16 hours to Toronto or 19 hours to Ottawa for a game is pretty tough. Even 8 hours to Winnipeg or St. Paul (Minnesota) is a pain.

And hey, I for one am happy for you that you got to see two NHL games live. That Swedish Elite crap must really get on your nerves now that you have seen the best there is, eh?

What Keiths said. I was living in a city where the closest NHL cities were Boston and Montreal, both more than 12 hours driving. We had pre-season games every year or two, but those don't count.

Congratulations, that rocks.

I absolutely hate the dump & chase tactic and appreciate
any team that actually makes an effort possess the puck
as they enter the zone.

Still remember a recent World Championship held in Germany, who only qualified because they were the host and ended up facing Russia in the Final. A game that was tight --with an inspired German team playing in front of a huge "home" crowd-- before Pavel Datsyuk took over late in the final period.

I've heard it's as densely populated as it is large as well. By the way have you ever heard of a plane? You don't have to drive everywhere you're going you know. And you don't have to go every week, my surprise was not that he didn't watch them on a regular basis, but that he had never watched one. If you like hockey, and you live in Canada, no matter how fucking remote, you should at some point have visited one of the larger cities, and if you did that you could've watched a game. If you didn't, it doesn't sound like you're that interested. That's all I'm saying.
Oh and the Swedish elite league really is crap, that's why I watch the NHL.

Really it's about marginal value. I went to see a lot of Major Junior games back in Halifax (our team won the Memorial cup last year, it was a great season). It's a good time, the arena holds about 10k people, and it can get damn loud in there. Sure, the level of hockey isn't as good as the NHL, but it's exciting and cheap. I'd rather watch a Major Junior game live, than an NHL game on TV. Now, making a trip to an NHL city, with all the associated costs can get quite expensive (tickets to games in Montreal and Toronto don't generally go for less than $125 each for the nosebleed section), and personally, for that much money, I'd rather take a trip to go skiing somewhere nice.

note: I now live in an NHL city which is only about a 2 hour drive from some of the best skiing in the world.

So the only games you've been to have been in Stockholm. Or, in other words, you only went because it was convenient for you. Well I've got news for you, those may have been "NHL games", but you did not receive an NHL experience. If you were truly a fan, you'd have bought a ticket for one of those plane thingys you've heard of, and flown to a proper NHL city for a proper NHL experience. But since you haven't, it doesn't sound like you're that interested. That's all I'm saying.

I didn't say I got the "NHL expereience" all I said was that I've watched NHL games and he hasn't.
It wasn't that convenient, I had to walk 500 meters to get to the arena. And let me tell you, that was an exhausting walk!
No need to get on one of those plane things when you can see a game more locally. I take it you don't go to Dallas to see an NHL game. So you do the same thing sister.

I support the Red Wings. I happen to live in Detroit. The Wings are one of the league's premier teams. I could go see a game in Columbus (as I plan to do this year) and the experience will suffer. I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to travel.

Nice attempt at a distraction, but ultimately you produced more fail. I was comparing you directly with another in your exact situation; neither of you live in an NHL market. You gave him shit for never flying to an actual market to see a game. You yourself have never done so either. Hypocrite!

I support whatever team comes to Sweden to play, so like you I don't need to to get on a plane to see them. *sticks out tongue*
Btw, you don't just "happen" to like the Red Wings, living in Detroit makes you at least 900% more likely to root for them.

Explain my childhood love for the Toronto Blue Jays, a team playing in a city I had never been to before 2011, when I had the Detroit Tigers right in my backyard.

Also, you just got embarrassed. It's ok to admit.

Do you want me to explain why you like the food you like too? If I'm unable to do so is your conclusion that there is no reason why you like the food you like? Oh well, I guess I can play along.
Your love of Toronto Blue Jays can be explained by an occurence that happened during your formative years, you witnessed your mother screwing a guy from Toronto, he wore their jersey when he did her, you were impressed. Next sports team please.

New divisions and new playoff format For or against?

I think they new divisions are great...though the names are something to be desired. In the East especially. How you can have a division named the 'Atlantic' with only 3 of the 8 teams actually on the Atlantic is ridiculous. The 'Metropolitan'? Named after a drink? Even the Pacific with Edmonton and Calgary (about as close to the Pacific as Detroit is from the Atlantic) is silly. Smythe, Norris, Adams and Patrick would have been much, much better (and classier).

The new playoff format, with the top three in each division making it, and two wild cards will make the final weeks pretty exciting. The imbalance between the two divisions is something I could live without, but there isn't much else they could have done aside from leaving Columbus in the West.

I haven't given the other divisions much thought, but I'm super excited about the new Metro division (yes, I'm calling it the Metro division - deal with it) for several reasons.

1. Old Atlantic division preserved in its entirety.
- Potvin still sucks.

2. Columbus and the Rangers now in the same division.
- More Nash vs. Columbus & Gaborik, Dubinsky, et al. vs. the Rangers.

3. Rangers and Carolina now in the same division.
- More Staal family reunions.

4. Penguins and Crapitals now in the same division.
- More Crosby/Malkin vs. Ovechkin

Against both the divisions and the format. They really made the divisions illogical geographically and the playoff system sucks.

Best team in the league can easily beat everyone but one team in their division for five years. It just so happens that they end up playing each other every year. The best team will never get to the cup because they simply can't beat one team. It's stupid. Divisions play each other enough, no need to make it only that in the playoffs.
Besides that, it's mathematically easier to make the playoffs in the west.

Putting Detroit in the East is still one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of and makes me vehemently against it.

All they had to do was switch Columbus and Winnipeg and everything would've been fine. Still can't believe this happened, especially with having the mismatch in number of teams per conference.

f*ck, they still have a chance to do it. JUST PUT DETROIT IN THE WEST AND I WILL SHUT UP BECAUSE THATS WHAT IVE WANTED.

Am I the only one who is legitimately angry at this stupid shit? Can someone explain WHY they put Detroit in the East?
