New Zealand Police Formally Request Rape Club to Desist

Postby saxitoxin on Mon Nov 11, 2013 7:09 pm

A New Zealand police inspector reports that the police have requested a rape club to please stop raping people and have counseled the members - and family of the members - that it is very rude to rape people. While police have made this request several times since 2011, the police are now pleased to report that - in light of added media attention - several of the members have told them they will stop. Unfortunately, others don't seem to be interested.

Where is the option for exhibiting more cultural sensitivity? Rape becomes a tradition and heritage. Part of these peoples cultural make up. The police in New Zealand are very conscious of the need to display appropriate cultural sensitivity at all times. Maybe the way to do this would be to lock up the rapists in cells with rather rapey blokes larger than them. Learning about rape from the perspective of the rapee rather than raper may well prompt a quick cultural change and swift attitude realignment.

No no no. Nothing is better then a strongly worded written message, where they can list there grievances with this rape club is the most diplomatic solution's.

FWIW even though the police were rather powerless in this case, the guys (statutory rapists, its pretty murky as to what kind of consent was given by the girls, hence the powerlessness of the police) have taken an absolute thrashing in the media, to the point that to say they have gone unpunished is not true (though arguably their punishment should be greater).

Remember you cant have your cake and eat it too; by limiting police power to protect against things like police corruption/brutality, this is one of the adverse consequences.

We can either have police corruption/brutality or clean police who punish only the most obvious crimes? I don't think so.

Maybe the police aren't doing anything because these guys haven't actually committed any crimes. Trial by media does not = guilt.

In the US, statutory rape gets the perp(s) thrown in prison. In New Zealand, a strongly worded letter?
"Eh, whatever."

I would like to point out that the Papacy excommunicates using Comic Sans. People would stop raping if the letter to them was in that font.

Eh watch the whole video.

The police cant do anything because they have not received a formal complaint (hence they are limited in what they can do because of restrictions on police)

It wasnt a trial by media but more a viral attempt that went, deservedly, horribly wrong.

And yes if they were over the age of 18 and found guilty of statutory rape they would likely do jail time.

I would rather see the occasional criminal go unpunished than live in a police state.

I was bored last weekend and watched some of those "Cops" shows on TV. It's amazing how bogus and flimsy some of the excuses are for the cops to arrest people in the Police States of America. I'm glad there are still some countries that have a presumption of innocence.

Hasn't it already come to light that one of the girls involved made a formal complaint years ago and the police turned her away? What has to occur before an arrest takes place in New Zealand?

it appears BarackAttack is correct

Victim Tried to Enlist Police Help 2 Years Ago

After days of insisting no formal complaints had been made about a teen gang calling themselves the "Roast Busters," New Zealand police now admit a 13-year-old girl made a rape allegation two years ago. The girl, now 15, told 3 News on Wednesday that police officers asked her to re-enact the alleged rape using dolls during a videotaped interview in 2011. "It was traumatizing," she said.

Radio: Victims Making a Fuss About Boyish Mischief

RadioLive hosts Willie Jackson and John Tamihere have been accused of "victim-blaming'' over their line of questioning of a young woman who is friends with a Roast Busters group victim.

Jackson and Tamihere asked her why and how much the girls had been drinking, and why they were out late at night.

"The other side comes to it, were they willing drinkers?''

They also questioned why the girls, some as young as 13, had not made formal complaints to the police, asked "how free and easy are you kids these days?'', and asked Amy what age she had lost her virginity.

They also described the Roast Busters' actions as "mischief''.

Jackson and Tamihere also implied that some young girls who had consensual sex with the young men may now "line up and say they were raped as well''.
