I'd like to create a list of reasons why we should avoid fossil fuels. But the twist is that we won't discuss global warming. Instead, we'll focus on all of the other reasons why we should switch to a different energy dependence; please keep climate science discussions to a different thread. I'll start.
1. Coal mining is responsible for neurological deficits in children, asthma attacks, and heart disease. (Source) Even nuclear power taking the place of fossil fuel emissions has saved 75,000 lives per year as a result of preventing air pollution. (Source)
Rare earths needed in electric cars make them nonviable as a real alternative. Diesel can get the same efficiency as a hybrid but can last 2-3 times longer, less maintenance and don't require rare earths. Biodiesel can even further extend the engine life and eliminate sulfur exhaust.

It never ceases to amaze me just how far people will go to defend their core beliefs.
Fossil fuels are run by cartels, are centralized with few winners. It helps small groups amass money and influence that can be used to keep the masses dependent.
Chicago used compressed air for most of their transport until the patents were bought up and sat on. If you search for compressed air Chicago on the internet, you find nothing. Many similar technologies have been quashed by the fossil fuel giants.

* = I chose wikipedia because the presentation is easier on the eye then most other sites I found on the subject, cross reference with other sites if you doubt the veracity of the information.
13: Engine efficiency in fossil fuel driven vehicles is truly horrendous compared to electric motor driven vehicles
For details on on the various types see this wikipedia page*(don't scoff!), scroll down to the section headed "Internal Combustion Engine", you'll find this paragraph:
For details on the electric motor check this wikipedia page*, then scroll down the section headed "Electronic commutator (EC) motor", you'll find this paragraph:
So now you'll probably ask: "Where do you think the electricity comes from in the first place, Hippy? Coal fired, and oil/gas burning power stations are still needed! " -To which I would reply; "Glad you asked Numbnuts, and here's why..... "
14: Fossil fuel burning power stations efficiency are horrendously inefficient compared to Hydroelectric dams and Tidal power schemes.
Hydroelectric and tidal power are top of the list as you can see from this handy graph located on this web page HERE:
