When talking to my family back home I get the impression that most people are barely even aware of the dispute between China and Japan over the Senkaku Islands, much less any of the details.

Just wondered: has this been treated as any kind of big deal in any of the Western media? Do you guys know many details about what's been happening?

Senkaku tensions is that new thing they're promoting to replace Kegel exercises, right? My g/f, Esmerelda, has been trying them lately (IIRC) but I haven't noticed much of a difference.

People in the US foreign policy media generally consider that issue to be the next flash point by China--including China's tensions over the other islands claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, and/or Philippines. A good portion of foreign policy analysts (e.g. Daniel Drezner) think that the USG is overreacting, which exacerbates the tension between China and the US with its allies. Other FP analysts who support the current US approach talk about the dangers of appeasement. Aside from the rhetoric, no one really knows what the USG thinks because that information is classified. The uncertainty prevents either side of the outsiders from getting a better glimpse at the truth, so the soundness of either stance is unknown.

From what I've observed, the US 'public' doesn't really care. US media in regard to government has been generally focused on domestic, economic issues with the occasional blip like the possible US war against Syria.

In Western Media? Not much has been said. I have, however, visited a site that does post some articles on it from time to time, but linking it here would be an insta-ban, as it does have more than the island issues on it. A lot more. However, it does have a very heavy Japanese supremicist slant to the articles from time to time (kind of funny sometimes, really).

FYI, not Chinese, Japanese, or any other Asian heritage (username, I know, but I used it because I was into Muay Thai at the time). As far as I know anyways. If there is, probably so small it doesn't count.

China has been on a land grab spree, Tibet, Mongolia, small pacific islands, crazy about hong kong, etc.... They have a terrible human rights record to top it.

Now they want to steal islands belonging to Japan. What a surprise.

1. China is expanding defensively (lol) to protect itself.

2. China is expanding to capture additional resources with the added bonus of enlarging the buffer zone (?) around itself.


All I'm saying is that (1) is mostly bullshit, and (2) makes the most sense.

(?)--those rocks and reefs can't support any large military installations, thus can't really add to defense of the mainland. Outright owning the rocks and reefs would let China expand its naval sorties throughout the area, but IIRC they already do that anyway, so... not really seeing much practical defensive purpose for those reefs.

I'm not defensive of China, I just believe that if your neighbour has a speck in their eye, then wait until you have removed the log from your own before trying to help them.

I would defend anyone in a similar fashion.

Edit: I do personally know 4 of Hong Kong's richest 10 people. Are they "in" on it with the "grand conspiracy"? For the most part, yes,but they have their own concerns as well. Playing one side against the other is the oldest tool in the book and I don't support it in any situation.

We don't need war, it's always the small guy who loses, not the leaders.

I'm not saying it's true of the islands, but China (including the government) does seem to suffer from a paranoid sense of America trying to encircle and contain it. It's the main reason the freakshow in charge of North Korea continue to enjoy massive economic support from the Chinese government - the Chinese don't like the idea of Korea reunifying, as a unified Korea would most likely be aligned with America and therefore American troops would arrive on the Korea-China border.

Funny how Kerry, brother under the skin with George Bush who is up to his neck in the JFK assassination, is now trying to point the finger at Cuba/Russia.
