The Paleolithic diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruit, fungi, roots, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.[1][2][wiki]

that grass-fed part isn't always true

Isn't this just Atkins (other than the lack of salt, oil, etc.)?

I did Atkins back in college and lost a ton of weight. My brother did Atkins in high school and went from about 280 to about 180 in a year. He also passed out in the twice. He then tried to do it in college while also drinking beer and gained weight. For those not familiar, Atkins basically tells you to cut all carbs out of your diet, but you can eat whatever meats, etc. you want. My brother ate a lot of bacon.

Nah, because with Paleo it's not about reducing carbs since you need carbs (Atkins can be an insanely unbalanced diet). With paleo, you'll get your carbs from vegetables, fruits, and nuts; exclusions are listed above.

People I know who've stuck to Paleo have lost 10-20 pounds--while maintaining the same rate of exercise.

Costs:
(1) One concern is that from what I hear grains play a crucial role with your neurological system, so transitioning to Paleo takes a mental toll after which one does recover. Everything is fine afterwards, but the transition really sucks.

(2) Paleo is a more expensive diet. Rice and other grains are much cheaper than vegetables and fruits in terms of carbs and calories per pound.

No, Atkins includes a lot of things like cheese, etc not in the Paleo diet.

Also, I have never heard that the paleo diet excludes grains, it just excludes the highly developed and processed ones we think of today
.

There's different Paleo diets. The one I'm familiar with excludes all grains, but dairy products are fine.

By the way, I'm not endorsing Atkins. It definitely is unbalanced and is extremely unhealthy in terms of cholestoral, heart issues, and the body generally needing, you know, fucking carbs. Additionally, once you go off, you gain all the weight back fairly quickly.

As I indicated above, one's diet depends on one's own body in my opinion, as well as the access one has to various food products. Additionally, in my various experiments with diet and health, I've found that exercise AND proper diet is key (at least for me). If I eat better and don't exercise, it doesn't help too much. If I exercise and don't eat better, it also doesn't help too much (college excepted, where I played a sport and exercised 2 to 3 hours a day).

That's the problem with all diets, if it's only short term it's not worth trying, the only diets that work are those that you can continue with throughout your life, and those are generally not called diets but referred to as "healthy food". Stay off the diets and eat change your diet to a more healthy one :).

If Atkins tells you to cut your carbs then it's not the paleo diet. Plenty of carbs on vegetables, nuts.

Question, did any of you had high cholesterol after doing the diet?

I did something similar to the Paleo Diet, but I eliminated only the starch from the diet, and I did eat sugar, yogurt and other stuff that wasn't in the diet. Needless to say, I ate a lof of eggs, bacon, meat to get the energy. I lost a lot of weight as well, at a point too much, and only once in the whole year in a half that was on this diet did I have the cholesterol levels little over the normal levels. I continued the diet and next time it was fine.

I've never had high cholesterol or blood pressure even when I was doing Atkins. I think it's genetics though.

The no-carbs thing is a big myth about Atkins. At the beginning you reduce carbs to an extremely low level, but you gradually add them back until you reach a stable point. It definitely includes a lot of carbs in healthy form -- leafy greens, vegetables of all kinds except for roots, seeds, nuts, and berries are all fine. In the later stages even grains in moderation are allowed.

To be honest, the most leafy greens I've ever eaten in my life were when I was on Atkins.

When I did Atkins I went from 248 to 195 in a very short period, and then I kept it off with no problem. It was the healthiest I've ever been. Got me to quit smoking, start exercising, start a new career. I was full of energy. Then, I made the fatal mistake: stopped being celibate and started dating again. All the single mothers smoke cigarettes and eat pasta, and within a short time they corrupted me, got me smoking and eating even more than I had before.

Now I'm single again, and I'll probably take another shot at it. I am dating again, but I'm making a very strict rule about no smokers and no pasta-lovers.

About the cholesterol thing: I didn't monitor myself much, but I have two friends, both pharmacists who take health science very seriously. They both did Atkins under medical supervision and watched their numbers very carefully. What they found was that their total cholesterol didn't change much, but their LDL/HDL ratio improved dramatically. That is also what you find, generally speaking, if you go through the various websites of people who have done it and posted about it.

There's a lot of anti-Atkins propaganda out there, but much of it is based on observing people who have never actually studied the book and just think Atkins means eating big piles of meat. In fact greens, nuts, berries, and other healthy vegetable matter is a HUGE part of doing Atkins properly.

This is the biggest problem with most results... to many people just make a quick glance and think they fully understand, when its generally the details, not the big points that REALLY matter.

We can partly blame the media, but also this idea that you have to be able to fully explain anything in 15 seconds.
