22. In relation to the Constitution of the Senate, Canada shall be deemed to consist of Three Divisions:
1. Ontario;
2. Quebec;
3. The Maritime Provinces, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick;
which Three Divisions shall (subject to the Provisions of this Act) be equally represented in the Senate as follows: Ontario by Twenty-four Senators; Quebec by Twenty-four Senators; and the Maritime Provinces by Twenty-four Senators, Twelve thereof representing Nova Scotia, and Twelve thereof representing New Brunswick.
Fast forward to 1873 and the split became:
which Four Divisions shall (subject to the Provisions of this Act) be equally represented in the Senate as follows: Ontario by twenty-four senators; Quebec by twenty-four senators; the Maritime Provinces and Prince Edward Island by twenty-four senators, ten thereof representing Nova Scotia, ten thereof representing New Brunswick, and four thereof representing Prince Edward Island
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia each lost 2 senators!!!!
I have a proposed constitutional amendment
In relation to the Constitution of the Senate, Canada shall be deemed to consist of 10 provinces and 3 territories.
They shall be represented in the Senate as follows. The inverse of the population percentage shall be calculated. That number represents how many Senators that province or territory will have.
So, for the current numbers:
Nova Scotia - 37 Senators
New Brunswick - 46 Senators
Newfoundland and Labrador - 67 Senators
Prince Edward Island - 242 Senators
Quebec - 4 Senators
Ontario - 3 Senators
Manitoba - 28 Senators
Saskatchewan - 32 Senators
Alberta - 9 Senators
British Colombia - 8 Senators
Nunavut - 988 Senators
Northwest Territories - 808 Senators
Yukon - 958 Senators
