The u in words like favourite is hardly unnecessary. Without it, the word would be pronounced with a long "o", like fave-ore-it, rather than the way it is pronounced, as fave-ewre-it.

I would be fine with changing the pronunciation to match the simpler spelling. Or not.

We butcherers pronounce it fay-ver-it....we also butcher french words, german words...whatever. Try to have a conversation with a Cajun....or a French Canadian.....lol.

It is England's fault for coming here in the first place! Ha!!

ps - what about pastour, majour, matadour, etc?
