Cameron won't debate because he doesn't really care about the outcome. If Scotland goes, Tories win the next 2/3 elections; he has no real reason to try and convince Scots to vote No. That might be why he and Osborne have been trying to undermine the Better Together campaign since it started.

Personally I think the only reason the vote will be a No is because Salmond isn't that good. He gets flustered and doesn't really have much of a plan. The vote is 5 months away and Scottish people still don't know what currency they will have if independent!

My own view is that Scotland is bad off at the moment because of the Tories - we all need to get together and get rid of them at the next election, a strong Scottish Labour vote will do just that.

That's the other side of it yeah. I wouldn't say 'England wants out' as such, it's another close one in the polls. I'm an Englishman and I strongly want to stay in Europe, as do the majority of the politicians (they know how foolish leaving would be). The people who want out are most tend to be those living in the past who still think the UK is a behemoth on the world stage, probably the same people who think Blair was somehow single-handedly responsible for a global recession!

Likely because Salmond is his own worst enemy. Leave him to talk and you're fine.

He doesn't come across well, and he's promising things he probably can't deliver. I'm no Cameron fan, I voted Lib Dem, so I think I'm going to a dark fiery place now, but he just needs to leave Salmond to his promises and let everyone else tell him how they're unrealistic.

Gerry Adams tipped off Salmond where he can go to get some quick cash for the campaign treasury and what to say to pander for it.

Salmond was also unabashed in playing to America's own experience of independence from London. “One of the first and most exciting tasks of an independent Scotland will be to devise a constitution for our new nation, and in doing that we will undoubtedly look for inspiration to the US constitution,” he said.

“The military significance of Scots and Scots-Irish Americans such as John Paul Jones, Ulysess S Grant and George S Patton has been immense, but Scotland’s most cherished contributions to the USA relate to values and ideas – the constitutional thinking of James Wilson, the philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie, the environmentalism of John Muir.”

Darling, who was accompanied during his meeting with reporters in Washington by a British diplomat, is also unafraid to play the economic card, claiming support from the American oil industry and Wall Street.

Salmond responded to such arguments with a speech at Bloomberg's energy summit New York stressing an independent Scotland's future as a thriving petro-state.

He even ramped it up by wearing his native costume. I wonder if Bloomberg asked him to do a jig, whip up a batch of whiskey and recite lines from Braveheart? He's acting like an even bigger cartoon character than the Queen when she comes doorbelling for dollars and has to throw on the tiara and Order of India for her performance. No humility.

You're right, I've seen some of the arguments. I just don't think he's winning outside of that narrow front.

If England leaves Europe, and Quebec leaves Canada, we will have a spot for you Limeys. I assume you would move England to North America. I think Quebec would like it off the coast of France.

Bring Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales with you as it is a big area to fill.

I wonder what would happen to Ireland?
