Travelling to London/Paris...any tips?

Postby tkr4lf on Sat Jun 21, 2014 6:03 pm

So in less than two weeks, I'll be in London for 4 days, then Paris for another 4 days. (I think it's pretty sweet that to celebrate my nation's independence from the UK, I'll be visiting London.)

We've got guide books and such, but with this being an international forum, I figured some of you have probably been to and/or live in these places. Any tips for me? Stuff to see, stuff to avoid, stuff to be on the lookout for? Anything at all?

Are the major tourist attractions really worth seeing? Any cool places/things I should check out that aren't big tourist traps? Local eateries, sights, etc.? Any good beers you can recommend I try to find?

Paris: buy a museum city pass. Then you won't have to wait hours just to buy tickets for tourist attractions.

My source: Rick Steves Europe. Youtube his helpful guides.

When you get to England thank them for gifting the world with the English language that is spoken almost everywhere.

With only 8 days, I'd say skip London, and just go to Paris.

Don't go with your grandma.

I went to London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff and went to mostly museums and palaces. I was super bored.

Talk to the cabbies because they're hilarious.

The short answer is yes, the major tourist sights really are worth seeing. Notre Dame really is the most beautiful thing ever crafted by human hands. I hope you're not bringing any whiny kids with you. If you have an appreciation for medieval history, you can go into Notre Dame with a quiet and meditative air and the pillars themselves will speak to you in the voices of the men who made history, but the illusion is broken if you have any whiny kids along tugging at your shirt and wanting to go back outside for ice cream.

I had the wife with me last time. She did the tour but she too got impatient and went outside for ice cream. I spent an hour alone with the great stone pillars and dreams of the glories of the twelfth century.

St. Paul's is overrated, I think. The best cathedral to see in London is Westminster Cathedral. It's walking distance from Westminster Abbey, which is also worth seeing. But Westminster Cathedral is the real piece of eye-candy. Despite being built in the 19th century, it has a staggering beauty that is rarely seen in buildings that modern. Honestly. If you only have time for one building in London, Westminster Cathedral is it.

If you're into modern, there is literally a shitload of amazing new buildings in London that weren't there last time I was. If you manage to see the new headquarters of Lloyd's before I do, I will be intensely jealous. One of the world's best modern-art collections is in London, too. If you're into modern, go see the Tate, without a doubt.

The Louvre: All the guide books will tell you, you cannot do it justice in a one-day visit. If you try to take in the whole thing in one day, you will be tired and haggard from running around, and you won't really have any new appreciation for any of the pieces. Since you've got only a week for two cities, you can't afford the three days that a real tour of the Louvre takes. You MUST do your homework before you leave. Choose which pieces you want to see, know what floor they're on, go directly to those sections and resist the many temptations along the way. What do you want to see? The Madonna on the Rocks? Bernini's Hermaphrodite? Vue de Val d'Arco? You have to know what you like, plan it in advance.

You're American, you probably want to see Delacroix's Liberty....:)

Myself, I'm a big fan of the early Renaissance, but it's not for everybody. I asked my wife, "what do you think is the must-see at the Louvre" and she said with conviction, "the Iranian collection." Truly, being in the presence of the Lamassu is impressive. If you've never seen a full-size Lamassu, you need to go stand beside one just once. The pictures just don't do it justice.

Okay, I don't want to write an encyclopedia, but there's just two off-beat sites that I would really, really recommend. One in London, one in Paris.

In London, go see Battersea Power Station. (That's the one that's on the Pink Floyd Animals cover, surrounded by early copies of your avatar, actually. ) An unintended monument to industry and power, it's both loved and hated. If you've never seen those four giant phallic symbols rising to the heavens, you haven't appreciated London.

In Paris, behind Notre Dame, visit the monument to the Victims of the Holocaust. Again, avoid yakky tour groups or whiny kids. It needs to be contemplated in silence. I won't try to explain what I mean. Just go see it, preferably early in the morning or late in the afternoon when you have the best chance of being able to meditate alone. Truly art in the full sense of the word.

Then go to Montparnasse and buy a T-shirt. :P

Have fun on your trip!

In London take a walk along the South Bank, see the buskers, maybe bo to the aquarium which is next to the Eye.
Get some fish 'n' chips with a great big pickled onion.
I used to love just walking about in London - it's such a varied place, you'll always find a surprise around the corner.

I've always really enjoyed smoking hash in Paris. Just feels right, for some reason.

In London: go to a pub for one of the World Cup games. Have sausages and mash with a few pints of bitter. If you don't really know anything about soccer then don't try to comment on the specifics of the game, just cheer, gasp and groan whenever everyone else does.

In Paris: eat baguettes and cheese in the park. Take a selfie in front of the Mona Lisa.

Call those bangers and mash, or the waiter will look at you strangely.

In Paris, make sure you go to Montmartre, which is the original bohemian area of the city. Take the cable car up to visit the Sacre Coeur for the evening. You get loads of people outside at night drinking, whilst people play guitar and perform cover songs. Super. Up the road there are many restaurants, where if you are with a bird you can take her out for a three course meal which is what I did and try some local delicacies (frogs legs, moules frites etc). Down the hill from there is the moulin rouge and the sex district, where you can have a great night out if that is your style of entertainment.. During the day, if you like museums the Musee d'Orsay and the louvre are great. We did a boat tour on the saone and the hop on hop off bus tour which takes you all around the city and tells you a lot about the history, which is really interesting. Make sure to visit and go up the Eiffel Tower too for a great view of the city. Be careful about packing the sight seeing in though, we were only there three days and with quite a heavy itinery got pretty burnt out by it all.

London, there is so much to do it is hard to suggest what the best attractions are. I guess it would be good to check out Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the millennium wheel is a short walk away too. Don't be afraid of using the tube, it is pretty easy to navigate the different lines if there are similar things where you are from and you know the location and destination you plan on visiting in advance and the route. There is a useful tube map app too that might come in handy. If you want to go out and party in the evening there are a few options depending on your preferences:

1) fancy a piss up and pub crawl - then head down shoreditch way where there are plenty of cool and niche bars (you can head home via brick lane for a curry too if you wish),
2) wanna get drunk and get off with some slaggy English girls - go to clapham and head to infernos, but make sure to pre drink before you get there, it does get rowdy
3) wanna dance til six in the morning to techno or drum and bass and take a load of ecstasy, head over to fabric in Farringdon, where the music is loud and the MDMA will keep you raving all night, very easy to pick up you can just be in there 10 mins and someone will ask you if you want anything
4) bi-curious and out to experiment in Europe? Go to heaven nightclub in charring cross, open til six am and full of desperate horny gay guys

Hope this helps, any follow up questions please let me know

I've never been to London but spent a few days in Paris in 2011.
Are you seeing the palace of Versailles while you're in the area? I would highly recommend a day spent out there. Be prepared for lots of walking!
The Eiffel tower is cool to see twice; check it out once from the ground during the daytime and then return at night to climb it and see the lights of the city as well as the lights on the tower itself. It's pretty cool! Also, the grassy field adjacent to it seemed to be a popular hang-out/picnic spot and filled up with people in the evening.
Notre Dame is awesome; I got in on a chorale performance while I was there and it was an amazing experience. Highly recommended.
The Arch of Triumph is nothing to special; it's worth seeing but I wouldn't plan on spending much time there. And if you're planning to climb the Eiffel tower anyway, there's no point in paying the extra to climb the arch too
I basically ran through the Louvre; make sure to leave enough time for that and arrive early enough to get an English headset if you don't speak French (they were sold out by the time I arrived).
The subway system is awesome in Paris because it criss-crosses the whole city. If you buy a booklet of tickets, make sure to get enough for your entire stay and maybe even an extra one if you're flying out. I used my last ticket to get on the subway to the airport only to find it had expired by the time I arrived at the airport where there was a second gate to enter! Ended up having to pay a local dude to swipe his monthly pass for me...
Also, make sure to book a hotel far enough in advance if you're there during a busy time of year! I was there near the end of June and the city was packed; I finally found a dumpy 1 star hotel with clean sheets and crashed there for a couple nights.
