I think the king of the Franks had the right to call his realm France without being afraid of butthurting mister sacksi brown from the future.
There'se never been such "empire of the gaules" including all what your map does, your friends from the unversity of virginia might mix things up with the roman empire. Not even what could be called the gallo-roman empire looked anything like this. So take your crap map, go back to the drawing board, you are grounded.

Based on verifiable evidence which I don't care to verify, I'll jump to emotions and lean toward FRANCE.

Modern French might have a few drops Frankish blood due to rape by the Franks, but they're not Franks. But you name your country France - "Land of the Franks" - even though there are no Franks living there (other than the German embassy).

So either Macedonia is an okay name or I'm renaming this thread "WEST ITALY vs. SOUTH BULGARIA."

betikins, what's your view on black, brown or yellow people who have French passports? Are they really French?

I mean, really French?

This conversation is starting to get a bit stupid. When the king of the franks founded his realm do you really think it didn t include the franks? Guess what, over a couple of milleniums, our borders have moved around.

Let me be clear with macedonia/fyrom:
Mister Mac has a large property that he calls Macland. Long after his death, a family that has nothing to do with mister Mac, the Slavmics, camps in a part of the back garden of that property. The Slavmics decide one day that they want to be called the Macs, and to rename the small part of the back garden they re in Macland (while Macland is the name of the full property).
So milleniums later we have again the Macs in Macland, claiming they had this great ancestor Mister Mac they are so proud of.

So a guy whose parents moved from Nigeria to France in 1990 can potentially be considered French?

Speaking of large properties with Greek names ...

Now what do we call it? I vote "Fort Fromage."

if he speaks well enough yeah. When I say well enough, I mean that he really has no accent and uses commonly used 2014 expressions. If anything swiss/canadian/belgian comes out of his mouth you take his passport back!

So in Greek mythology the dead are resurrected outside the Nike store in Paris?

Or did you steal the name from the Greeks?

THE POLL IS CLOSED.

Final results:

    France (West Italy) - 50%
    Macedonia (South Bulgaria) - 50%

To break the tie I've flipped a coin and it came-up 'heads' for Macedonia.

MACEDONIA WINS!!!

Okay, so a Nigerian kid with parents from Nigeria who has no French ancestors whatsoever can claim to be French.

What if a person living in Macedonia speaking Macedonian who probably has ancestors from ancient Macedonia claims to be a Macedonian?

the language he would speak would be slavian based, whereas if he was from ancient macedonia his language would be greek based.

Well then seeing as you live in a former Roman colony and speak a language that is ultimately derived from Latin, I guess you're a Roman.

Glad we've cleared that up. Three cheers for West Italy!

I can't believe you're taking my passport. I'm a good guy. I love the area I bought my ranch in and I don't hang out speaking honglaise with a bunch of Brits that moved to one of the near by towns. I'm an ardent supporter of local economics and only wish to live life, raise beef, be part of the comunity and eat whoppers often.

Hurtful bro.

Well I'd rather see you calling me a roman or a phenician rather than a gaul or a frank. My culture is much more latin/mediteranean than celtic/germanic. So thanks for the kind words mrs wdk!

Is that true Goran?

Image

Alexander the great comes from the green part that is today greece. Ancient macedionians spoke a greek dialect, they were nothing slav. The slavs arrived on the 7th century after christ, so they have absolutely nothing to do with the ancient macedonia. Even if you look at this map, what is marked in red is the borders of the ancient macedonia of alexander the great; it has almost nothing to do with FYROM. In grey is what we refer to in modern days when we refer to macedonia, that is a region. Goran comes from a state within the region called macedonia...

The map shown by betiko predates Alexander the Great... By the time Alexander came to power whole territory was part of Macedonia. In what betiko says as birthplace of Alexander or today's Greece there is large Macedonian population. And that place is 30 miles from nearest Macedonian town by road(good part of American CC players travel that distance to work every day).

betiko wrote:and they deceptively called it macedonia. Blame us for calling you FYR of macedonia.

Who is us? It's only you

betiko wrote:Maedonia is either the name of an antique nation or a modern region.

Says who? The loser from France

betiko wrote:You just showed up 20 years ago and said... "wouldn't it sound cool if our new country was called macedonia? It would look like we actually have a history and shit"

For a person with chicken brain I dont expect that you can digest more then 20 years of history...

As a side-note:
During the trial of Philotas that took place in Asia, Alexander raised the question of the use of the Ancient Macedonian language.
He spoke: 'The Macedonians are about to pass judgment upon you; I wish to know whether you will use their native tongue in addressing them.'
Philotas replied: 'Besides the Macedonians there are many present who, I think, will more easily understand what I shall say if I use the same language which you have employed.'
I guess Ancient Greeks were unable to understand Ancient Macedonian language. source: http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Post/135178

blah blah blah. An ancient greek from thessalonica, from sparta or from heraclion obviously spoke different greek dialects and didn't understand each other. As I said earlier, ancient macedonian was a greek/barbarian dialect.
It's pretty pathetic that Alexander the great is the only think you desperately try to identify yourself and cocitizens with to try to exist somewhere in history.
But if it makes you happy: I'm sure you are a direct decendent of alexander the great, and after 2 and a half milleniums you have inherited of all his qualities. We all wish we were lucky enough to be from FRY of macedonia, the place to be! Everybody knows that! A land that is a few miles away from where stuff happened over 2 milleniums ago. Damn it Goran, is there any way to apply for that citizenship? become macedonian and solve all your life problems!!!!!!! macedonians are the happiest citizens on the face of the earth!!!!
