Unfortunately for you there are many well known chefs that would disagree with you. A local very well known Asian American fusion chef who has a restaraunt here in the Boston area uses one all the time and was the one who suggested i purchase one myself. Because perfecting rice isn't easy if you are trying to make it to exacting standards...

I guess it depends on your level of standards....I'm not saying your rice is awful but I bet it's not considered "perfect" by culinary standards.

If you served my rice to someone who has a PhD in Rice then they would probably find some faults with it, but for everyday consumption I never have any problems.

I would consider a great chef to have that PhD you speak of. but don't get me wrong ,rice cooker rice isn't perfect. it's consistently good and easy as pie!
and that's all I look for in rice!

I made vindaloo last night and it turned out pretty nice. Tip: If you're not a great cook, invest in a rice cooker. They're cheap and make perfect rice every time.

i never used one until i came to china, but they do a damn fine job. wouldn't go back to a pot.

I've been cooking since I was eight, not a ton of variation though; baked goods, American, Thai, Chinese, Italian, and a little bit of Mexican and Japanese, everything else is hit or miss without a recipe.

By the way, is following a recipe some sort of skill? The vast majority of people I've met absolutely cannot make a basic risen bread, even with a four-step-long recipe, five measured ingredients, and a video explaining kneading, rising, and pre-heating...

I wouldn't exactly call that "basic." I made a risen bread once with baking powder. Now that's basic.

As much as a typical recipe; when, how much, how long. The problems usually come from second guessing the recipe for reasons I can't understand: " It seemed like too much flour, so I added less. The temperature seemed too high, so I lowered it. There was too much raising time, so I just waited for a half hour... "
And it always comes from people who supposedly know how to cook.
