Like others have said, it depends on the situation. Though if it's family, unless others insist on it, it usually goes to one person. With friends, it tends to be split but can be under 1 person (particularly if it's a special occasion).

That wasn't really aimed at you, more at the people who started saying 'well, when I'm with my sister and mother-in-law...'. Family usually works differently to friends, which is why I didn't include family in my question.

I remember being at a bar when a bunch of bankers wanted to split a bill evenly 6 ways. The total bill was just over 30 dollars. Not a single one of them brought cash either. The bartender basically told them to f*ck themselves. There are rules of etiquette for who pays the bills. I try not to eat with people who don't follow the rules of etiquette, they simply aren't worth my time.

Friends and workmates we just check off what we had from the cashiers computer. The computers are all set up for doing this quickly where I live so no reason not to really. But I don't socialize at the level where wealthy alphas are attempting to assert. We had a manager who put up his own personal credit card on the bar at after work drinks the other week (we usually pay for our own after work drinks); most of the team found this very uncomfortable.

In business dinners and what-not its typical that one person will try to pay (usually the person who is the "supplier" in the relationship), however we have company policy that we pay our share regardless as we are state owned and this form of "networking" (I'd call it very minor/subtle bribery) is very much frowned upon. We pay our share with the company credit card at any work related event.

If for any reason the restaurant/bar is not well equipped for individual payments we will often just divide equally for ease.

When other people grab the check and take a long time to figure it out, I sometimes try to point out that I am a physicist and can do arithmetic in my head more quickly than most people, but I usually get drowned out by the people who insist on figuring it out themselves. Or ignored because they are too busy computing the tip on their cell phone calculator app.

When I'm with close friends, usually we just all put in a fair share and make the ones who have a larger salary pay more.

I am a software engineer and have a physics degree and am awful at arithmetic
