If Donald Trump becomes president, the US will not only continue to be reviled around the world, you will also become the laughing stock of the world. You may all hate Obama, but at least the world respects him even if you don't. He will actually go down in history as one of your better presidents.

The video is right that sensationalism and gimmicks beat political interest by a wide margin, but the question should really be how much does that correlates to the actual result. Is Trump really polling so high because everyone is seriously going to go into the polling booths and vote for him, or are the polls being skewed by silliness such as joke votes or apathetic/procrastinating (non)voters saying the only name they've heard of?

There have been good polling numbers for Stephen Colbert, Deez Nuts, and Captain Crunch, so it seems a bit early for anyone to consider Trump the real front runner. I mean I certainly can't muster up any legitimate interest in these campaigns with over a year before the election...

Bottom line the masses are too stupid for the gift of democracy. How can the average joe be competent to chose who will do the better job when the important criterias are always secondary?

OP would have a point, if Trump was the first ridiculous politician to emerge in US politics. But he's not.

Trump is especially ridiculous, but that's how electoral systems has always worked.

People with a voting licence. You should graduate in something that teaches how to be a good voter, something as neutral as possible.
I know most americans are not stupid enough to vote for trump, but those that would are clearly too stupid to be given the ability of voting.

You realize any system designed to keep only the competent in politics can still be corrupted, right?

Nothing can make a meritocracy ideal, or any other system designed by mankind.

Plus, how do you determine what means competency and cleverness? Any such test would naturally favor some and not others, who are intelligent in their own right but not in the 'right' areas.

So what, the world doesn't hate us because of who is elected president. And if the rest of the world hates us, why would there be any reason to give a single fk if they laugh at us???

The world respects Obama? HAHAHA. Show an example by sharing a short list of 'the world' that respects Obama the most. Based on the rest of your post, I'll pass on your predictions how Obama will go down in our history.

Surely. I'm not a Trump supporter per say, but I do like the shake up that's going on per non-politicians. I like that Trump says a lot of things that need to be said, and that is to say he says things that virtually all politicians would never say and that is what brings us to a big problem we have. Politicians only saying what voters want to hear, even if they believe the opposite they will get up on a rostrum and lie their asses off, and they will refuse to speak certain truths because how it could play out based on predictions about groups divided by race or income or a litany of other things. I think this is part of the continuation from one of the first threads I ever made here in 2008 'the 4th great awakening in American history'.

The reason I posted the video was to share one reason why Trump is making waves as well as to share information that lends credence to my opinion that polls don't mean jack and they are simply a tool of the media and driven by the media. Trump may be crushing everyone in the polls in every state, but if the primary were tomorrow I would bet a days pay he finished no better than 4th. support of a celebrity with giant balls is one thing, organizing and motivating citizens to get involved in and vote in primaries is something completely different.

IMO Trump is a breathe of fresh air, but I think in the end he may very well end up hurting the Republican party and perhaps burying some ideas and policies that could be good for America

BOOM! / wins the thread

I think another way of saying that is Trump may be an expert at understanding the media, how it works, how it impacts viewers, and how to use the media, plus many more facets in a way that generates publicity and interest, much in the same way Obama is brilliant at utilizing the political correctness embedded in the public education and in media culture and motivating people emotionally to mobilize in a way that results in getting more votes based on fears, prejudices, and hatred.

I watched my first Trump speech today. I admit as much as I pay attention to politics I fall asleep during most debates and interviews. ANY state of the union speech will do the trick, I'm sure I've never made it through in one sitting. That said, Trump is entertaining and keeps many people's attention and I watched all 40 minutes of it. His crowd in Oklahoma was HUGE! Not quite as big as the 2009 Tea Party at the state capital (40,000 :D) but almost as big.

Actually, I have talked to several foreigners with whom I regularly interact. Most of them seem to have a great deal of respect for Obama.
