If you build in the style of chinese toilets (other regions do exist), then you have minimal depth in which to install plumbing system. This will retrict the size of U-bend that can be installed, and it is the U-bend which keeps seated toilets scentless.

This can be avoided if its considered carefully during construction, but I'll bet it never is.

In most cases when a sewer smell comes from a toilet, it may be due to a bad seal at the wax ring.

Or...the damn toilet and floor around the toilet needs to be cleaned, mopped and sanitized!

If you need to squat to poop, you might consider eating more fiber and less squid eyes.

Of course it's going to stink if it hasn't been cleaned, but I've been in some that looked perfectly fine, but still smelled awful. I don't know how they install the squat toilets, or if they even have a wax seal - maybe that's the problem.

To answer Wing's comment, I've often seen them installed on a riser, which would presumably allow for a u-bend.

I think the problem in my in-law's condo may have been gasses coming up through a floor drain. I don't know if there was a u-bend in the line.

I'd suggest that they start using this stuff...

but unfortunately it's not designed to work with squat toilets.

It would be interesting to try one of those fancy japanese models:

Won't someone please think of the drunks?

There's nothing to hang on to while you're throwing up. No comforting porcelain bowl to hug. And there were times when I could barely stay seated without falling over. The coordination required to squat and take a dump without falling in would have been out of the question.

By most plumbing codes, floor drains need to be trapped, but these traps dry out without water being added. Thus sewer gases escape and cause odors. Add water or water with vegetable oil [to slow down the evaporation process]

I don't know what plumbing codes they have in China, but I would suspect they treat them as suggestions. Kind of like laws regarding traffic, or storing hazardous materials.

No American is in a position to accuse other nations of poor building regulations.

New Orleans disaster has nothing to do with building codes. Reminder, Army Corps of Engineering screwed up.

Doesnt matter. The geotechnics codes in the US allow for soil to withstand load in tension. To put it simply, it suggests that soil such as silts can be used to withstand pulling forces, such as those experienced by a piece of string. European codes have not had this assumption for over 50 years. This is just one example where the two entities disagree, and in most cases its pretty intuitive to realise which is wrong.

Sure the Corps may have screwed up, but theyre neglecting to tell you that actually it wouldnt have stood up even if they had built it as per design.

And this is also why I will never ever move to the US. I have more integrity as a designer than to use these codes.

I noticed the squat toilets I saw in China were made by American Standard.

I hate to say it, because he/she (mrswdk) is arrogant... and his (for lack of a better pronoun) presentation of his point it rude.

Still, he's likely right.

Throughout the course of the vast majority of human evolution, we (as a species) squatted to poop.

In some places they may have been in use for several thousand years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet#An ... ilizations
That was certainly not universal... and even after their invention, the vast majority of people would still squat.

No other animal has contrived a "seat" to make them "more comfortable" in order to shit.

When you squat you ass opens up more in a very natural way.

That saying. I still use a toilet.
It's easier, especially of you are wearing pants.

Your pants style, thickness, fit... and the sanitation level of the floor... impact ease-of-use.

Still, if I had enough room for both... I wouldn't mind having a WC with a "squat-toilet" as an option.
(Just like I'd also get a stand-up "John" for my man-cave... if the wife would allow it.)

I would make a modification... the addition of some strong railings / or grip bars.
I think those would help older people... and would ease the transition for westerners interested
in experiencing this "new" way to shit.

If the wax seal is broken, then water would be on the floor. They smell due to 2 things: lack of a proper trap as mentioned above, or lack of proper venting, also known as the stink pipe.
