Hafta vote against Queen and Dylan.....Freddie was obsessed with that opera singer at the end...amazing but....not for me. And Dylan? Really?

Every time the local rock radio station does their best countdown (20 years now), Stairway to Heaven is always #1....fixed?

Got to see Page and Plant in concert around 17 years ago...that was very cool.

No. The list of greatest rock songs is not a proper subset of the list of greatest songs, nor is the order among the two lists the same. Greatest rock songs are not merely great songs that also happen to be rock songs, but rather the songs that best embody what is great about the genre.

Well then this went awry with post number 2

That is why you are WRONG Mets.

I LOVE Led Zep, but stairway to heaven is not #1. Besides, you clearly don't understand rock music when you stated above that you don't agree with Neil Young's message.

Mets is correct - Stairway to Heaven is the answer. However, I would also accept AC/DC, Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and some others. I'm partial to Chop Suey! (although probably too short), Killing in the Name Of, pretty much anything by Tool but I would go with The Pot or Aenima, Enter Sandman, um... let's see... Alive, Dissident, basically anything on the first two Pearl Jam albums.

Definitely not rock songs (and thus disqualified)- anything by Michael Jackson, Imagine (and pretty much most anything by the Beatles), anything by Bob Dylan.

It really is. I still get chills down my spine every time I hear that guitar solo. Every. Single. Time. And I've listened to Stairway countless times.

Also, I agree with like literally everything TGD just said, which might be the first time that's ever happened.

The Beatles "Twist and Shout" I would consider rock, but their's was merely a cover of the original, which was done by the Isley Brothers.

Truth be told though, I only like that song and "She Loves You" by the Beatles. The rest? Don't care for.

Look, I am not the one saying Bob Dylan wrote the best rock song of all time to date, it was thousands of people.

So y'all can scream it was King Biscuit Boy as loud as you want, but you are WRONG

No that is a list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time." Not greatest rock songs. (In case it isn't manifestly clear, Like a Rolling Stone is not a rock song.)

Satisfaction came in at #2, but if you had to pick even the greatest Stones rock song, that wouldn't come out on top.

Chills you say?

Oh, well then, I stand corrected. You should have stated that fact earlier.

Led Zep wins because mets cringes every time they play.

I like just a few Beatles songs, and none of them could be considered rock songs. That being said, I saw Paul McCartney in concert this summer; he brings the rock (albeit not when he's playing Beatles songs). My wife is a huge fan of the Beatles (to explain why I went - given that I think the Beatles are extremely overrated).

Worst rendition of a great rock song - Jack Nicholson singing Go to the Mirror -

I agree with mets, there're too many good contenders to name one as the greatest, although I disagree with his choice of Stairway.

But pretty much the embodiment of "rock n' roll" I think atm might be Ram Jam's Black Betty. Take a song from a blues icon, put in some hard drivin' guitars and drums, and rock out. That's pretty much how rock started.

That's a totally upside-down view. The Beatles had a lot of great rock songs. Helter Skelter, Back in the U.S.S.R., Paperback Writer, etc., all had that hard-edged sound that seems to be what you call "rock" in your first paragraph.

Personally, I prefer psychedelic the psychedelic stuff like Day in the Life and Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and Strawberry Fields, but that's just my taste. It's not why I think your opinion is upside-down. Why I think you're upside down is because you are dismissing the Beatles, presumably because they're too "pop" oriented for your (apparently) metal-ish tastes, but then you say Paul brings the rock, when in fact he was the most candy-assed and pop-oriented of the Beatles. It was John and George who brought the rock. Paul brought the weed and the sappy love songs.

I was lucky to catch AC/DC back in 2008 in Denver for their Black Ice Tour. One of the greatest times I had! Couldn't hear anything for awhile afterwards without yelling, being inside the Pepsi Center and the last song being For Those About to Rock with canons going off, but would never trade it for anything.

They also recently had another new album, Rock or Bust. Their first album without Malcolm Young (co-founder with younger brother and lead guitarist Angus Young), due to Malcolm having dementia. I am liking it though.

Anyways, Highway to Hell launched AC/DC onto the world stage, Back in Black cemented them as one of the best bands ever.

It seems I differ from everyone else here because the lyrics and message is what I like , yes the music accompanying helps, but when it becomes a freak show when the group has no real talent and basically drown out the lyrics nty, not for me, btw 3rd for me is Peter Chris's Beth, get the drift any of you?

let's just get it over with... this encompasses all that is great about rock n' roll (starting off with that kick ass Chuck Berry jump stop groove)... and i will exclude all the great black artists that INVENTED rock n' roll, because i know Bernie Sanders is too narrow minded to have listened to or be familiar with most of them... so, here you go... rolling stones, of course:

and if you haven't seen 20ft From Stardom and heard the story of Gimme Shelter being recorded, you are missing out. You have to picture a pregnant Merry Clayton in a mink coat with a scarf on her head screaming "RAAAPE, MUUURDER!!!!," with Mick Jagger going nuts in the background. I had never picked him up shouting/clapping in the background, until i heard it on this documentary (2:20)...

since we are talking about "white rock", i'll leave it right here... however, i am SHOCKED nobody threw out STRANGLE HOLD, one of my fav songs to play on the guitar~!!!

Ah well said Jesus de Nior, and a step further who the f:;k ever heard of pop until they made the super freak king of it? Lmao and even then the title should have gone to Prince who could hit the same notes as freak and could actually play a mean guitar reminiscent of Jimmy not as good but damn site better than the freak who got the title. And let the hating begin.
