Scott Shapiro of Syd Jerome Menswear is among the businesses that chose to reinforce their windows, saying he’s had “zero indication” of any additional protections in the Loop. The men’s clothing shop is located on Madison Street, just down the block from City Hall and along the route to the United Center.
Shapiro said his storefront has been damaged on four previous occasions, with windows broken merchandise looted and other property damage.
“We know from past experiences something could ensue so we want to be proactive and get ahead of it,” he said.
Crews with a business called Chicago Board Up Services say they’ve boarded up at least a dozen locations around the West Loop, downtown and Daley Plaza and have plans to work on additional businesses weekend.

In contrast to the pro-Palestinian protesters who are planning what they call a “family-friendly march” during next week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, another group of demonstrators here promises a “militant” approach to the DNC — and expects police to clash violently with protesters.
In one post on social media, that group urges “students and youth” to come to Chicago during the DNC to “take police beatings and arrests” in an effort to “shut down the DNC for Gaza.”
The group, which calls itself Behind Enemy Lines, wrote recently, “Make bruises from Chicago police batons the 2024 back to school Fall fashion.”
Behind Enemy Lines says pro-Palestinian activists have faced repression. “But have you thrown down with the Chicago police yet?” the group wrote in a post on its website.
The group also was advertising a protest Tuesday at the Israeli consulate in downtown Chicago under the slogan of “make it great like ‘68” — a reference to the Democratic convention held here when police infamously attacked protesters opposed to the Vietnam War.
Behind Enemy Lines has opened a temporary office on Chicago’s Northwest Side, decorated with posters bearing slogans such as “Stop Killer Kamala” and “Fight Back for Gaza!”

Israel can do no wrong. - God

Psalm 105 gives encouragement, depicting an Israel that never puts a foot wrong. Then Psalm 106 chastens, with Israel getting hardly anything right. If we didn’t know the full Old Testament background, it would be hard to credit both portrayals as true.

Kamala Harris Suffers Triple Polling Blow Before DNC Starts
Vice President Kamala Harris has suffered a triple blow after two recently released surveys put her behind Donald Trump in the key swing state of Pennsylvania, while a third showed her trailing the Republican presidential candidate at the national level.
Polls of likely voters in Pennsylvania conducted by Cygnal and Emerson College both gave Trump a 1 point lead in the battleground state, which comes with 19 Electoral College votes. Separately, a Napolitan News Service survey gave the former president a 1 point advantage nationally.
[A fourth blow]
(...)
Between August 12 and 14, RMG Research polled 2,708 likely voters across the United States for Napolitan News Service, which found Trump leading Harris by 46 percent to 45 percent. When undecided voters leaning one way were included, Trump's margin extended to 49 percent against 47 percent, compared to the last RMG poll a week ago, which put both candidates on 49 percent.
(...)
The survey found voters aged under 40 backed Harris over Trump by 61 percent against 36 percent, while the Republican nominee's strongest lead was with those aged 50-69, where he led by 57 percent to 40 percent. Trump led among protestant voters by 58 percent to 40 percent, and Catholic voters with 60 percent against 39 percent. Harris enjoyed a 84 percent vs 13 percent advantage among atheist and agnostic voters, along with a 56 percent to 39 percent lead for those with no particular religious affiliation.
