i like the new changes and it looks like a real map now i only have two suggestions
--is it just me or is the whole borad a little askew like it was rotated clockwise just a tiny bit the 3 doesent seem strait down to me
--and to further the chalk board idea maybe you can make the font in a chalk like font and the diagram too but that may be too hard to apply but i think that would be really cool
The double border between 7 and 19 looks a little bit off, or it might just be me. Also i think the key and the board are too close together, you have alot of empty space in the key, so i dont think it would be that hard to make it thinner. Otherwise very nice.
Heh... its hard to look for flaws by looking at the whole image... you really need to zoom in and look only at chunks of it at a time. The spots and lines create an optical illusion.

I agree that it looks like the 3 is shifted clockwise a bit....but its not. I just snapped some straight vertical and horizontal lines and they went directly through the middle of the spaces. As for the chalk like font, I'll have to esperiment a bit with that so it can look a little better.
Gavin: I agree that I need to make the key thinner, so I'll be sure to do that in the next update. I don't notice anything wrong with the 7-19 border but I'll check later. And yeah, I look for the flaws when zoomed in, I just figured you guys might see something I was missing.

No, I'm pretty firm on the no diagonal attacks now that I've thought about it a while. It would give countries way too many borders. As it stands right now every Triple country has 3 borders and every other one has 4..and the Bullseye countries have 7. I think that's plenty.
And as an example of a line being slightly off...I just noticed that the double 3 and Double 10's in my last update went slightly over their line into the green section. But its so small you can't even see it on the regular zoom of the map. So I think I fixed most of those problems.
In case anyone is wondering the problems were caused because the white border lines initally stretched beyond the border of the board. That didn't matter until I had the non white background and you could see them....so I had to resize the white borders and it shifted them a bit.
Well lets see....I've tried to catch up on this all.
For the visuals, they are coming along. I like what you've done to the title. The piece of paper and darts is great. But the font is not so much. I think a handwritten font would seem a little more realistic than type text.
The legend is alright. I'm not a fan on the chalkboard. Why you ask? Because it's a chalkboard. Seems out of place. You might want to consider going with a piece of paper idea again. It seems more realistic. Do many lounges have chalkboards? Perhaps a cork bulletin board would be better suited for the legend...or perhaps as the background for the whole board! But I like the idea of cork, rather than the chalkboard. In the legend, the diagram seems a little waterwashed...in a bad way. Perhaps fiddle around with the colors and make them seem real, rather than just painted in.
The board is alright. It feels like a flat image though, no depth to it. It doesn't feel like it is hanging on the wall. It feels like it's glued to the wall.
As for the naming system, I don't think it is that bad. And I usually harp on names that aren't unique. I rather enjoyed Circus Maximus' idea of using the various Ruler's as continent names, but obviously anything similar to that wouldn't work for Darts. I think it will have to do, but I don't think it will hamper gameplay too much. A few minutes of looking over the board, and I could picture in my mind where '15 Small' was. In time I think if you play it enough, it will be easy enough to find what you are looking for.
Like I just mentioned in the Chess thread, when this idea was first tossed around months ago, I didn't seeing it being playable. But that is starting to change, but I'm still not quite sold on this one. The massive amount of countries scares me, but in a good way. Good progress thus far. Also, have you considered doing a physical play test yourself? I think this board may be a canidate for that, just to make sure everything works, and works properly.
i have another idea what if you made the ring (like small or treble) a bonus just tossing around ideas
great job oh and andy most dartboard sets (ones that come in cabinents and stuff) usually have a chalkboard or whiteboard on the side to help you play cricket
All very good suggestions Andy. I've taken many into account in this update.
I added a bit of a gray border to give the board some depth. I think that looks pretty decent and it no longer looks painted onto the wood.
I made the key thinner so its not rubbing against the edge of the map. I also agree that the chalkboard seems a bit out of place, and something like a cork board might be better. I was also thinking about writing it on a large piece of paper like bars might list the specials for the night, or something to that effect.
As for the title, I also thought the font looked strange and pasted onto the piece of paper. Now it is literally handwritten. I think it looks okay but I'm not sold on it so I'll have to see what you guys think.

I think they would be impossible to hold until one person was ready to win anyway. Those would be continents of 20 countries, all of which are borders. And it would have 40 bordering countries. I thought about it as well, but thats just too impractical.
happysadfun wrote:Possibly the bullseye should be worth more.
I think I agree with you...but how much more? 4 or 5?
For the continents on the outside, there are so many that people won't be able to prevent you from keeping some. Thats why I don't want a bonus higher than 2 or 3. But the bullseye is tactically an important place to hold and its also easy for people to attack to prevent you from getting the bonus. So perhaps a bonus of 5 or so might be more appropriate.

I couldn't find scribble but I wasn't happy with that last look so I changed it. Now the title is in Forte and the legend is Comic Sans. I tried Forte for the legend as well because I like how it looks....but I think it made it a bit unlegible, and legibility definitely takes preference in my mind (and thats the problem with most of the stylized fonts that look like handwriting.)
i dont really think the grey background actually gives the map more depth, it just looks... odd... like the latest title, better than previous ones. Maybe you should move the darts so they strike the corners of the paper and have the top left hand corner of the paper tilted in a bit as if the papers sort of falling off.

me and my next door neighbor both have a dart board.
we have a chalk board next to it and they have a cork board behind their dart board so when their kids throw and miss the board it goes into the cork board and not the wall. i'm more in favour of the chalkboard, but the one currently on the map should have some texture to it (look closely at a real chalkboard and you will notice that its not one solid color)
Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been a bit bogged down with work, but I am not giving up on this map for all those concerned (ie, nascarfan).
And kyle, I agree that Bradley Hand is a really good looking font. I will probably change the title to that in the next update...However I think Forte looks good as well, and Bradley Hand is rather thin, so I also might not change it. I'll see how I feel about it later.
If you are going to give the board depth and shadow, you need to treat everything the same, or else it just makes the board look odd. People are pretty good at spotting inconsistancy even if they don't really see it, but they will notice that something isn't "right".
