Kill Freestyle Now

Post by elfish_lad »

Over the last couple of weeks I've done what I like to call the "ownshooter search" (such as "search is your friend n00b") on the origin and conversation around "freestyle" play here at CC. I find it interesting. But here is the bottom line for me: I think freestyle play is bullshit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying freestyle players are poor players. By no means. If you have read my stuff you will know that I have a pretty high opinion of those in the top 100 whom some consider only freestyle players. I've seen their other games and believe that the top couple of pages of players on the scoreboard, generally speaking, are there because they are good. That's not what I'm talking about. I am saying that freestyle is bullshit because of the variables involved. It may be a good business model (giving customers options that jam the rush factor) but I still believe it is crap.

I see tons of players of higher rank offering freestyle speed games on maps I am interested in that I refuse to play because of the "uneven freestyle factor." Eh? UFF: Internet speed. Screen refreshment rate. Server load. Clickies add-on. Blah, blah, blah. The Elf goes out on a limb here and thinks that it should be removed from CC. Or at the very least confined to non-rated play. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here but who cares? More than farming, more than settings whoring, freestyle skews CC ranks and play.

I say we chase the monster down and put a stake through it's heart... or someone finally take my offer to teach me clickies so I so too can have a fancy hat.

Vote.

Elf Edit: I guess what I'm really talking about here of course is SPEED freestyle.

I'm no fan of freestyle, but it'll be a cold day in an infernal place before it gets removed... besides, freestyle now is at least marginally more fair than it was back in the old days...

It's worth playing with clickies even if you're a purely sequential player. It doesn't take that long to learn, and as long as you take care on certain maps with particularly-closely-bunched terits (parts of 2.1 and CCU come to mind, as do the city loyalty boxes in Iraq and the cell blocks in Supermax), you'll never misdrop again. Plus it makes everything faster, no more dicking about with dropdowns. More to the point, you'll almost certainly love clickies so much that you'll respond to the occasional "waaaaah clickies should be banned" thread like a mother reacting toward something trying to eat her child.

I will come back to this in a bit, but I can say 1 thing. Freestyle is a really fun game. Some of like the speed of it all. I am a junkie so what do I know?

But is it fair? Even? Manual is a rush 1v1 IMHO. I like the strategy. But is what I'm bringing to the game (other than my dim wit and other limitations compared to others) and what you are bringing the same in freestyle compared to manual? If I start Sid Meyer's Civ online with 100,000 others I want to start at the same point. Like I have. Is that true with freestyle?

I just don't think freestyle is even from the start. Am I wrong? Well... get back to me. :)

every game type has it up and down's

many people play and enjoy freestyle why would you want that to be taking away from them?

yes u are wrong :)

- manual is the beast u would want to kill, at least b4 fs, but I like both so dont u dare

- cant believe so many ppl get pissed when I nail their stack in manual game, they just dont get it that thats the way manual rolls, everything on one place and bam

- in fs u get to go at the same time, even first if ur faster or u join somebody's game, dont u think thats a lot more fair then seq game where u have map that start with 12 lands and opponent goes first

- u dont understand the rush of fs game, and u are not good enough to play it, cuz if u were any good with fs u would most certainly appreciate a good fs game

- sorry if I was too hard on ya here, just saying what I believe is the case here

1vs1 Freestyle is the problem, in my opinion.

(Yes, I was recently destroyed in a 1vs1 Freestyle game because my opponent was online all the time and I am only on this site about 5 minutes a day. No, I'm not butthurt.)

i don't know why there is even a discussion.

there is a button you can click, it's called 'sequential' if you check that button, you will not see the freestyle games.

problem solved.

pft... I've won plenty of speed freestyle escalating on my 2004 computer and dial-up. Luckily, I am buying a new computer soon. Freestyle speed is a lot less of who has the fastest connection etc. What the games really come down to are how well you can play. Here's why:

Since you make your move in the last 10 seconds, you have to know exactly what you are going to do from deploy to end turn, unlike in sequential where you can take it one step at a time.

Since you make your move in the last 10 seconds, you have to know what your opponents will do since you don't have time to look at where they are deploying and attacking.
- So many noobs at it often do stupid things such as attack and advance to a territory that several other people are autoing for cards. You have to think about what your opponents are doing during your turn, you don't in sequential.

Freestyle also adds the skill of timing an attack and deploy and fort. In sequential, you just do it. You only have one time when you can do it. In freestyle, there's a right time during the turn to do it and a wrong time. You have to be able to tell which is which.

And finally, what freestyle speeds on good settings (8 player escalating for example) come down to, is how good of a player you are. To hope to win one of those escalating games, you have about 1 second to think of whether to block, steal, go for your own target, or not do anything. You are either good enough to know what to do, or you are one of those people that needs to think when you play.

Btw, I have made colonel playing freestyle games, I have made colonel playing only sequential games, but more often I get there nice mixture of both. Yes, for freestyle speed, you need clickable maps and a computer that takes less than 2 seconds to load the page, but after that, it comes down to skill far more than sequential games.

I get what you are saying, and in truth I haven't played many freestyle games. I just don't think it is an even start is all. I'm sure I'll give freestyle a go at some point.

Cheers.

You're welcome.

Listen. Your whole post is subjective. Neon makes a lot of good points. I could quote your post and make it to fit any number of things. Hell, I see you love manual, and I can edit your post to call for "killing it" because it's a crapshoot and favors the faster player who deploys first

How does manual favour the faster player that deploys first?

If you deploy first, then you start first next round, and hence auto your opponent's stack first and win because of attacker's advantage.

Unless you deployed in different areas or split the deploy.

Yeah. Of course that's why I posted it like I did. If I would have had this post themed: "hey, what are you fine folks thoughts on freestyle for a guy who has never played?" it would have had 2 views and a half a response.

Cheers.

Wow thanks for the info on that.I wasn't sure. Why if you don't like something would you play it?

Well, I don't. Unless I do it the "cheap" way, using maps on which manual doesn't mean anything.

But for medals, is why people do it.
