Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Post by Timminz »

I'm surprised that there isn't a thread for this yet.

Is anyone as excited as I am?

Does anyone actually plan to watch the opening ceremonies tonight, or are most of you just in it for the sports, like I am?

Even though we're still almost 5 and a half hours from the start of the opening ceremonies, regrettably, tragedy has already struck these games. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21 year-old, Georgian luger, has died from injuries he sustained this afternoon, when he left the track, and hit a large steel post at nearly 150km/h (90mph).

WARNING!!! Graphic content!!!

I couldn't really care less about the Olympics. Except maybe for the hockey.

I usually watch (some of) the opening ceremonies for the Summer games but never the Winter games, I'm not sure why. I'm definitely excited for all of the racing sports (I don't care for the artistic sports or the pointless ones - ie curling). The only problem is that I don't own a TV so I'll probably just be watching highlights online.

I'll probably watch a little of the opening ceremony, but most likely not the whole thing.

I'm always a fan of Curling, Hockey, Snowboarding, and a few other sports. I'm just glad the Olympics are back on this side of the world so I can watch 'em live without having to get up at 5 AM.

RIP. That is an intense sport and no doubt some good will come of his death in the form of safety measures.

Now is it just me, or was that a recipe for disaster to place support pillers along the track with no safety net or at least doming the track or something? We can put a man on the moon but can't be bothered to find/install any better safety measures (other than a helmet) for a man shooting 90 miles an hour down an ice track?

The thing (as I understand it) is, the safety measures are all designed to keep the athletes from ever leaving the track in the first place. There was an article posted just a few hours before the accident, expressing concern over the track design. Why this track means fear

SPEED!

And WTF!? I just saw pictures of the crash(just before impact) and that is total BS. the sides of the course are two-feet tall with steel beams right next to it. Why dont they just run em around a blind corner into a wood-chipper?

I like the opening ceremonies, some of the events. I was excited, then heard the sad news. Even so, life prevails. I hope they honor the man, but I do want to see the ceremonies.

You know, Super-G is only the second-fastest alpine event. The one you want is the "downhill".

Super-G is also awesome.

Yeah, that too. The SG always seemed a bit more intense to me, but I really only care every four years so,....

But look at this:

.......mmmmmmmMMMMMMMBULLSHIT!

Billions of dollars to put this on and they chinced-out on plywood?

That picture is somewhat deceptive. He actually left the track before the end of the boards.

Still, something has clearly gone wrong in the planning for this. Hopefully, the proper lessons will be learned from this, so that it never happens again.

Hey, that "we are the world" thing was pretty humiliating for all involved. I wasn't aware that gangster-rappers are the world.
At least they did the canadian national anthem in a classy sorta way(other than singing it in some wierd language).

Im really into the Olympics, both Summer and Winter

I woke up at 3AM this morning to watch the opening live on tv and I just finished watching the rerun and I do this with pretty much every Olympics.

And I watch just about every sport, except Curling and Figure Skating so the tv here will be on the Olympics almost 24/7 for the next 2 weeks

Well I already am disappointed with NBC coverage. West coast they announced 7:30 opening ceremonies and dragged it all the way to 9:00. And when it comes Winter or Summer Olympics I want to see events. If I want a human interest story I would prefer to read it on the net or newspaper. My kid was looking forward to the ceremonies but it was time for bed.

I've been watching every possible moment, so far. The men's luge just finished. Those Germans know something the rest of the world doesn't. These races are usually won by hundreths of seconds, and this year, they're winning by over a full second. Apparently, their sleds are quite the pieces of technology.

Next up, the finals of the Men's moguls. This could, very well, be the first time a Canadian ever wins an Olympic gold, on home soil. A lot of people expected it to come last night, in the Women's moguls, but Jenn Heil finished second, in a hell of a competition.

I'm really getting sick of all the postponements in Alpine skiing (that's my sport). I really hope the speed events can get in before the games end.

And Alexandre Bilodeau does it! Canadians also placed 4th and 5th.
