Great had a bulletin around 4 hours ago about how these students who went to Mexico brought back the swine flu with them. So much for being safe on an island.

I must've been gone longer than I thought. What's all this about the swine flu? Is it the bird flu except from Mexico and probably just as harmless?

Nah, this is all very recent. There's been an outbreak of a flu that's a mix of swine flu, bird flu, and human flu, in Mexico. I think 60 people have died, and it's even spread a little bit in the Southwest US. Very scary, because the people who are dying are between 3 and 60, which follows the pattern of a flu pandemic. Usually it's infants and the elderly who die from the flu.

Oh lovely. Well, hopefully it doesn't make its way over to the armpit of America.

Oregon? I always thought that NJ was the armpit of the U.S. woohoo!
Also...
Thirteen of the eight boys and 14 girls and one of the three female teachers from the school's languages department had showed some flu like symptoms such as body aches and coughing, he says.
Editing?
Otherwise, that completely sucks. I really hope it does not spread too much. Do they have a vaccine for this?

Nope, Biloxi. Speaking of, I should probably change my location sometime soon....

I don't think this one is the pandemic they think it could be. I think it is a few steps away from being truly fatal. The US cases were treated early and all recovered. The Mexican cases had gone weeks before they were given medicine and thats why they died.

The swine flu is in Queens.
Riding the subway is now a matter of life and death. I go to school braving the dark unknown.

Nope, I am afraid there are quite a few other contenders for that title.

From what I understand, the one strange thing about flu is that it usually does hit healthy, young adults, teens, etc. more than those other groups.
the version in Mexico has killed. In the US, people have gotten sick, but all to date are due to recover. This could change anytime, of course. Spain has apparently been hit, too.

Is it just a coincidence that you have a dead bird as your avatar?
For those confused...I believe this particular virus can pass from bird to swine, then human, which is possibly why it could be dangerous

According to the morning news reports (NPR and all the major US networks, though not sure about Fox) the major problem is passing human to human in ways that the Bird flu did not. Bird have so far not been heavily implicated, though that link is being watched. (this virus does have traces of bird flu genes in it)

At least pigs don't fly the way birds do. Well, usually.

The flu has DNA from birds and humans, as well as pigs.
Is anyone really surprised that nobody has died in the U.S. yet? I mean, it's not like our health care is better than Mexico's. Oh wait...
