I've always loved that illusion, and when I first saw it I couldn't really believe it.

Re: Chilean Earthquake May Have Shifted The Earth's Axis
I actually saw some study about a person who made goggles that turned everything upside down. At first it was sickening and he could hardly function, but over time his mind got used to seeing the world upside down and he was able to resume his normal activities. Pretty strange to think about because ...

Re: Chilean Earthquake May Have Shifted The Earth's Axis
I've always wondered if the southern hemisphere people can tell that their feet are actually above their heads, and that they are standing upside down on the bottom of the earth. The blood must really rush to their head, hanging around upside down like that.

Just found out one of my high school friends won $200,000+ in a WPT poker tournament. Not incredibly famous but still pretty awesome!

Well, I think we're closest to the sun in about March of every year though I don't know why I remember that. The tilt of the axis (and consequently length of days) is what determines the seasons as you alluded.
Scrap that - March is the equinox but only mid distance for earth-sun.

Well, this IS all going on the assumption that the earth goes around the sun and not the other way around. Anyone want to debate the other side?

Yeah it's the tilt. But I thought that when one hemi was tilted away for half the year, it received less sunlight as it was rotating, and that's why it was colder. I didn't think the angle mattered... I guess it does though...
Both factors matter a lot. When you tilt toward the sun you get longer ...

they would have known that increased snowfall is actually a function of warming.

At least the Earth is slowly moving away from the Sun, perhaps increasing the duration and length of other times.

I also think that people should use seatbelts for safety, but it's not a government issue. (Well, unless other people were in direct danger of someone that didn't wear a seatbelt, which I've never heard of that being the case)

Re: Clean Coal: Myth or Reality?
The real surprise is the lack of natural gas use in Wyoming. Most states have coal as the biggest electricity producer and if they don't have nuclear or significant hydro then it is likely that natural gas and coal will make up ~95% of the total electric production.

Re: Clean Coal: Myth or Reality?
One fact that I find disturbing is how far ahead CHINA is in this. Even though they currently use a lot of coal, they will quickly be moving out to wind. It is the advantage of a rather authoritarian government that they can simply dictate what they want, and get it. China has dictated that 75% if ...

Also to note, coal is one, if not the lead producer of energy in the US, with Wyoming being one of the main sources.
