Rule #2: No secret alliances

Rule #2: No secret alliances

Any form of collusion between opponents must be announced beforehand in the game chat, in English or in a language all players understand. Secret alliances can be hard to prove, but if you suspect one you should leave the players in question negative feedback. If the players have a history of suspected secret alliances consider reporting it following the instructions at the top of the Cheating & Abuse Reports forum.

Got a question about this one, especially about the 'announced beforehand'. How is that defined? At the start of the game? Within the first 'n'-rounds? Or doesnt it matter when it is announced in the game chat?

As long as it's announced before it happens in the game, it's legit.

Meaning you can't say "Oh ya, for the past three rounds Player X and I have had an alliance."

correct, you can't do that. But feel free to say player X and I will be allied for the next 12 rounds.

Both of those comments would imply to me that you and Player X have had some ex-game communication, which as I understand it is forbidden. Truces need to be suggested and negotiated out in the open, don't they? Or is PMing a player during a game acceptable?

It is. The details of the alliance can be stipulated may be kept in private (I've made the ODD one over MSN before) as long as the fact that there WILL BE an alliance between the two people is said in game chat.

Communication between players outside of the gamechat is not expressly forbidden, not even planning an alliance by pm is forbidden, it just needs to be announced before ti takes effect. However, it's considered extremely bad style by most and people who do it should not be surprised if they receive negative feedback.

Is there a guide to alliance etiquette somewhere?

As a relative noob, I am not sure how to go about it, whilst maintaining as much advantage as possible (but still being fair!).

EG, I want to ally with X.

Do I:

1) PM X to see if X is interested, and if so, public chat announce an alliance between me and X (any public details also included in announcement)

2) Announce publicly I am going to PM X and ask for an alliance and then announce the result.

3) Announce publicly I am going to PM someone and ask for an alliance and then announce who if successful.

(All announcements would be before I made another turn, obviously)

Any guidelines on this?

All are fine though 1 is the most common.
