"Clive, I asked you to pop down to John Lewis for some curtain fabric. That was many, many years ago. Where have you been?"
"Well that was the problem, the fabric! It had to come all the way from Flanders, and the boat bringing it was intercepted by vassells of the french king, so I tried to get the name of the king, because I wanted to complain, but it was quite complicated. It turned out that when the last son of King Phillip the Fair died, the direct male line of the Capetians had actually ended, meaning that the French throne would theoretically pass to Edward the III, through his mother, Queen Isabelle, so the French invoked Salic law to transfer the crown to Philip of Valois..."

Yes, yes i do. Weren't those the days or what?
Yes though it was pretty cool when Ak deleted the thread that must not be named and then tried to act like he was cool with it after it came back.
Ak and I never got along. He would always flirt with cahoots then I would say that we hung out that night and he's get all pissy. lol. Hate to say it but I kinda miss the guy.

"I ran into Johnny Rotten, lead singer of the Sex Pickles, the group named after the Queen's corgis: he told me of the film they are to make written by the cockney rebel with a Rolls, Johnny Speight. Johnny R seemed very contemptuous of the idea of getting up every morning at six."

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
Unfortunately I found nothing particularly interesting in tonight's posts. On the other hand, we caught two chipmunks for the price of one today, though we felt sorry for the second one. Basically we have a huge chipmunk problem at our house (They're digging up all of our plants). So my dad set up a bunch of traps for them, the kind that lures them in and catches them without actually doing them any harm. However apparently two chipmunks tried to get into the same trap today and when the first activated the trap the second one got it's back leg caught in the door shattering the bone.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
poor chipmunk.
We do get them here, but not enough to be a problem - I still see them as cute adornments to the garden.
We've also had in our garden Raccoons, groundhogs, Opossums, thousands of squirrels, snakes (I believe a rat snake) and deer - oh, and last year a black bear wandered into the downtown nearby and installed himself up a tree next to the library.. The only ones that have proved a problem are the deer. They come from the nearby reservation, and though they are cute as hell, they eat all the flowers, starting with the prettiest and working their way down.
I've seen no deer outside the reservation this year, which may reflect the success of the cull earlier this year. I just hope they didn't go too far. There was a big protest at the deer cull (mainly on the basis of "deer are cuddly"), but I've seen so few since then they may have had a point.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
our biggest problem comes from the Chipmunks, followed by rabbits, then followed by coyotes. We get the occasional coons and deer but not enough to be a problem and the ony snakes we've ever seen are the good kind, king snakes at least 8 of them through out our yard and a few who are huge.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
Back in the UK, our biggest problem was with domestic animals (mainly cats), though we did get kept awake at nights sometimes by foxes (who's cry sounds like a tortured baby). We also supposedly had a badgers' set opposite our house, which by law they'd had to build the houses around. I never saw any badgers in our street, though I once encountered a whole brood of youngun's in a field on my way back from the pub. They were gorgeous, though I was worried as they barred my path home and I've heard bad things about how aggressive adult badgers are.
oh, that's the European badger of course, not the guy that you call a badger in the US.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
Yeah, I've heard rumors that we have some black bears in our neighborhood but I've never seen any sign of them. The things I'm the most afraid of running into are rabid coyotes, the regular ones scare off pretty easy but just like anything rabid they become a whole lot more dangerous. We've had to use our shot gun to kill a couple coyotes that we thought were rabid and scare of a few more but so far all the ones we've gotten have turned up clean.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
The black bear in our town climbed up a tree in a garden near the library, and wouldn't come down. Eventually they shot him with a trank gun, and he fell out. They took him away and released him somewhere more appropriate.
A neighbour made what has to be one of the most obvious comments I'd ever seen in a newspaper - "Black bears falling out of tree, eh? That's not something you see every day!"
Sadly the bear apparently died a few months later in Maryland. The story wasn't too clear but it sounded like he'd been run over.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
That reminds me of something I saw while watching Animal Planet. There was this mother black bear that wandered into town looking for it's cub (who had apparently been caught the previous day) and while trying to get it under control, the police accidently got it to go up a power line. So with no other alternative they shot it with a trank. The problem was that the bear didn't fall immediately and when it did, it's foot touched with the power lines and the bear got zapped. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, the bear eventually recovered fully and was released with the cub back into the wilderness.

oh, I forgot - non-brits probably wouldn't get that -
The implication was that it's normally "cobblers" coming out of my mouth, cockney rhyming slang ("Cobbler's awls" +"balls").
