It was cutting edge in it's day. The harbinger of the modern "chaos future" film. Yet with all the grit of the old hard-boiled cop/detective films. You had other well known stuff out around that time - Mad Max, Star Trek II, E.T. - and it would be tough to argue that Blade Runner was not breaking ground.

Once I had a seminar on some motivational theme du jour, and the guy opened with the Rutger Hauer monologue. There are a number of impressive kernels in there - the playing god theme, the desire for memories and a past, etc. These are the bread and butter of the sci-fi / anime genre today.

BTW Phil - I like the avatar. Did you check out my Dark Tower theme tournament (end shameless plug).

Sorry, I usually find you have good taste but I have to disagree with a lot of these.

Star Wars 4, 5, & 6 were great.
The new Indiana Jones while no where as good as the originals really wasn't as bad as people have been saying (not great but decent)
Shawshank was awesome can't see how you hated it.

I will agree about Bonds though.

Blade Runner is a movie that i have conflicting feelings over. In a way I think it's great, in another way I think the same as you.

The humor is not really mainstream and tends to be associated with the younger generation. Really, the only part that stood out to me was when they had the fight with the oranges or whatever it was. That scene cracked me up for some reason.

Anything with John Malkovich in it. He's supposed to be some great actor, but in everything I've seen him in he sounds like he's reading his lines for the first time off the script.

By younger generation, I suppose you mean people about my age. Though most of my friends agreed that it was a horrible movie, though a few others thought it was the greatest since, sliced bread? :o

Actually, no. You're a freshman/sophomore in college, right? I can't remember. I was referring to my sister's age group who is currently still in high school.

It came out when I was a Sophomore in high school. But yes, I am a Sophomore in college this year.

Yeah Napolean Dynamite is definitely a second time through hilarious movie. First time is just stupid.

But Kung Pow was great the first time through.

I am a huge fan of OLD Disney and I bought all videos upto Aladdin. but after that they lost the fucking plot.
Pixar films have been good but even they are losing the plot.

Why? - it's because of the voices. I'm sick and tired of the Disney films like Lion King and finding Nemo where growing up and learning is the film. f*ck off Disney and Pixar. Your main audience is growing up by itself and doesn't need to have some squeaky clean voiced character doing what children do.

Make films about stories that are told to children and get actors with excellent voices to supply the voices. I don't want someone doing voiceovers because they're famous in other films. Hell - don't even bother with actors.
Aardman Animation does really well by using taped conversations of people recorded in the street and moulding a character around the voice.

Easter Promises - man that movie started out with everything. The first 3/4 of the movie was like watching a modern, no holds barred version of Donnie Brasco. The fight in the bath house I was reminded of a line from Drawing of the Three about what you can tell how a man fights in a specific situation. Then it just died. It was like they ran out of film, or someone just said, hey guys, 3/4 of an excellent movie is enough today, we don't need to worry about the ending, and so it went. Hang your head, hollywood. Dan Day Lewis was good in There Will Be Blood, but still Vigo was robbed of an Oscar all the same. An all around clusterf*ck of a potentially great movie by Hollywood!
