"New" Maps Becoming "Beta" Maps

Post by AndyDufresne »

Ahoy Ahoy Folks,

We're just letting you know that New Maps will be listed now as Beta on the Start A Game screen. This is essentially more of a technical tweaking of terms to better describe how a Map might play when it is first uploaded to the system. So if you are wary of playing a new map because it might be unbalanced or unfair, avoid games and tournaments that use "Beta stage" maps. Maps will remain in "Beta stage" for roughly 2 weeks (give or take a few days), with exceptional cases perhaps lasting longer. Most of the qwerks and needed tweaks will be found during the 2 week "Beta stage."

Games will still play like they currently do: ---> Points will be exchanged, games will still be tallied towards medals, etc, but "Beta" maps may be unbalanced. ***Please note that since the maps will be listed as "Beta," the game play may change midway through the game as the map gets tweaked, fixed, and balanced. I don't foresee many head and heartaches, but these maps will be "played at your own risk." ;)

And as always, the Map Foundry loves to see new faces helping out during Map Production, so why don't you stop by and help us make the best maps we all can possibly make? No one wants a buggy and unclear map...so be active...help out!

Bananas to everyone.

Glad to see this happening. Extra bananas to edbeard for suggesting the concept in the first place.

I just hope there's an extra warning somewhere on both the game finder page and the start a game page

Does this apply to games started b4 the announcement and warnings were posted or just games started after?

Excellent question. "Play at your own risk" is one thing when you know there's a risk of things changing, but this... what is this?

Nothing about the maps has changed; just the labels... this works as a retrospective warning too ;-)

Good idea, is that a das schloss aftereffect...
If beta version can be changed during the test period, you should maybe put a version number next to the beta stamp on the maps. So each will know when it has been updated.

I have a question:

After maps come off BETA (as you said, about 2 weeks), do they get a "New!" thing on or does it become a normal map thumbnail?

After the Beta Stage, they'll get the "New!" thumbnail. :)

Perhaps at a later date such version numbers may happen, but for now we'll just keep things relatively simple and see how that goes.
