Obligatory 911 Thread

Post by Dancing Mustard »

So... it's that time of year again eh?

Does anybody have anything insightful or moving to say? Anyone want to reminisce about their experiences of life in New York on (or shortly after) that fateful day?

Or shall we cut straight to age old "Was it an inside job?" 'debate'? Anybody got a good youtube video to kick us off? Or shall we play the old 'argue about grainy pictures of the Pentagon' game?

Anyway, enough talk... bring on the clowns!

Don't be so disrespectful, World of Warcraft is a trivial matter and you ought not sully a serious 911 tribute thread with discussion of it.

Unless of course you have any tips on how to defeat Ilidan, or want to donate any mithril two-handed weapons to my night-elf mohawk located in Quagnoroth.

There's nothing new to say, surely?

9-11 (or, 11-9, as the ENTIRE rest of the world would say it) was a horrible terrorist attack, no justification etc etc.

Except that there's a documentary about some fat blonde minging woman who lied about being in the south tower and losing her fiance on C4 this evening which looks like it'll be entertaining. Apparently she was a national heroine for a while, despite looking like a bleached whale with Down's Syndrome.

It's a sad day.

If you weren't there, you can't understand. If you weren't there, you might think joke threads and conspiracy theory jokes are funny. They're not. If you've never watched a person die, engulfed in flames, if you've never watched someone jump out of a window, arms flailing, only to land with a dull thud on the pavement, a thin pink cloud instantly puffing up from the body while the rest of the corpse splatters out like a pizza that falls top end onto the floor.

If you haven't seen a woman stumbling around like a zombie, covered in concrete dust, grasping her left arm at the elbow, where her forearm used to be, the blood mixing with the gray dust, trying to put a tourniquet on her.

If you haven't ever been in a warzone, you couldn't possibly comprehend. No matter how many pithy or seemingly witty lampooning jokes you can make, it doesn't change, for a second, the way you would all respond had you actually been there.

Those of you making comments or jokes only prove to me and others that you weren't there, and most likely don't know what it's like to watch people get brutally slaughtered. I'd be curious to know if you'd be so cool and collected and able to make jokes at other people's expense if you were trapped in one of those towers, the flames making everything unbearably hot, the air thin, the sky clogged with thick black clouds of smoke, making it impossible to find an escape, if there even was one to be had.

if you take the word september, and rearrange the letters to form 'remetbeps', then substitute the 't' for an 'm' and the 'sp' for an 'r' you get 'remember'.

someone surely planned that one quite carefully!

if you take the words 'you weren't there' and rearrange the letters in similair cunning style, you get 'i'm so much more informed and experience than all you peasants put together'

just something else to mull over

Except that's not the case.

If you'd like to enjoy the wonderful torture of survivor guilt, you can be my guest, prick.

i enjoy plenty of 'i come from troubled times, i have seen terrible things, how harsh times in my life have been, aren't i brave for struggling on through even though the sky threatens to engulf me' already, i can live without another emotion leaping on board and stealing it's thunder.

So then why mock the suffering of others, if you understand it so well.

Why try to poke and prod them, if you know so well?

I doubt you do. I'm finished with you, you prick.

Jeeze, calm down Hammy McOverIntense.

It's like you think terrorism didn't even exist before 2001. Anyone over 20 in England has seen dozens of bombings and attacks, from the Irish to the Libyans to various Muslim extremists, bombing everything from planes to buses to shopping centres to army barracks. Oh, and Manchester. And London gay bars.

Don't get all twatty about the one major incident in your entire history ok? No-ones saying it wasn't horrible, all terrorist attacks are horrible, but you seem to think the whole world changed after 9-11.

it didn't, you just caught up.

I was at home, watching several small kids. I kept the radio on, was grateful that these kids (all under 2) really were still too young to understand, hugged them .. and prayed, as I believe a large segmant of the world did.

Pimpdave:
At what time after an event does it become OK to make jokes about it?

Actually let me rephrase that:
How long after an event do we have to wait until we can laugh at people's reactions to that event?
Is it OK to laugh at JFK conspiracy theorists yet? What about the story about pressure on Sony Pictures to rename the Two Towers movie because it sounded a bit too much like Twin Towers? Was it OK to smile at that?

And who in this thread is laughing at the 3,000 dead people or the awful manner of their death? No one. The troofers deserve everything they get, and DM's cartoon is hilarious, but not because it mocks a tragedy. It doesn't. Look at it again.

Wrong, you're jumping to conclusions. OF course other people's suffering counts, you guys are the ones too myopic not to back off from something still fresh in the minds of those who witnessed it.

You don't see me making jokes threads about Darfur, or Ireland, or any other place where there is horrible violence going, or has gone on, or suffered some horrible terrorist attack.

You act as if you THINK the only thing I'd notice is when it happened on my shores. You sir, are the douche bag here, not me. My only statement was that it's not funny to make these jokes about 9/11, and if you doubt me about that, please, by all means, go down to the WTC site today, and repeat them to the bystanders to your hearts content.

I doubt you'll make it more than 5 minutes, you arrogant cunts.

All true of course Pimp and a tragic day it was. I think you will also find that there was almost universal sympathy and condemnation of the act. (from most Muslim people too) It is just a shame the USA response was so bloody stupid; I think attacking Afghanistan was largely backed but when it did not sate the need for revenge the US went into Iraq? A place completely without connection to the terrible act.

So yes this is a day for remembrance but compared to living in the bomb-site which is now Iraq, New York is a great place to live; even on this day.

that is not my justification of dissent nor is it my way to diminish sympathy for all the innocents killed but it does perhaps explain some of the reasoning behind it.
The USA had its chance at unchallenged empathy and sensitivity on this day ... your rulers fucked it up completely!
