Byzantine Empire

Post by zukezorin »

Number of Countries: 54
Number of Continents: 8

I based this map off of the historical condition of the Byzantine Empire at and around the years of the Third Crusade - roughly 1100 - 1200 AD
The borders of the empire are nearly accurate. For the most part, though, the individual provinces and many of the continents I had to take large creative leeway with.
The names come either from the region/province that was there, or one of the major cities in that area at that time.

This is a rough version, that gives a solid idea of the layout and general appearance. I wanted to wait to add the textures, final lines/colors, and finalize the nametag placement until I heard opinions on the borders and province layout.

This was a blast to make, and something I had always wanted to see :o Nothing makes a great battle map like history. So tell me what y'all think!

EDIT: I took out the province names and river/mountain terrain on the request for an uncluttered version. They'll be there, don't worry.

[Most of the visual aids I used were taken from reference texts and map books - not much I can post as a link, sorry]

A nice map, however the general aria of greece/turkey has been done in several maps, mabye make it a bit earlier so it includes southern italy as well

looking forward to seeing how this one progresses

Byzantium was an idea I had considered, but I decided against as it does seem very similar to the current greece map.

mabye make it a bit earlier so it includes southern italy as well

Definitely have a go at this and see what it looks like. Visually this map needs a bit of improvement.

I looked at the ancient greece map (which is the one I think you guys meant) and I don't think it too similar...this one covers about five times as much area.

As for southern italy...that would be hard to do without completely changing the map. Going back to the 10th century when southern italy was still part of the empire, the entire area that is occupied by the seljuk turks would still be imperial. Part of what I liked about this timeperiod is you could see the two threats - Bulgaria and the Turks - creeping in on the empire.

Visually, its still in its basic stages. I wanted to know If everyone agreed some things should be changed, but I can make a more polished version.

So...if I make a newer version, should I replace the one on the front page?

no..leave that on there so we have a map to compare with and we can progression..it also make it easier to comment without always having to back to the front page
Would you choose supremecy if it lead to isolation?

Wow, this one is surely made in Paint
I think the area is well covered by Greece and Alexander's maps... Without a new feature, the idea doesnt attract me.

Anyway, where are the sea routes? In your mind?

Heh - made in Flash, actually.

But since everyone seems to agree that greece and that general area has been done too much before, I'll relent and let mine die. Oh well.
