The rights, as I wrote earlier, come first and foremost, as only then are obligations able to be met to any degree what-so-ever.got tonkaed wrote:Seems a bit grandiose in the rhetoric here. The rights of the social contract are in part only given because there is shared participation in the social contract. This is expressed in any arrangement where we can decide to end the right of someone to life, either through war or through the death penalty or through even taking someone off of life support. Although all have different circumstances they all express a similar point, when one no longer participates in the social contract that these rights are held within, they are no longer subject to these rights. It is simply life after all, you can do the same thing for liberty and perhaps more abstractly happiness (or property if we are going to go with the original usage of the notion) as well. If you violate laws thus breaking the social contract (not fulfilling ones obligation) then you forefeit your protection under the rights.Unborn infants are not serial killers, nor anyother type of criminal. They will not have that chance at life due to abortion. That is the difference here. The US has laws (that were meant to be) that are used when someone's "right" oversteps that line and harms someone. Up to that point however, people are (well, supposed to be any way) free to do pretty much what they want. Also, without that right, there is little in the way of obligation, as when you take one of the 3 founding rights, the person whom you take it from has no obligation to you as they do not have one of the natural rights that were a part of this country's founding creed. In order to have any system of rights, it most often requires a system of obligations as well. Without some type of obligation, the right in and of itself is of little value. If you have the right to do anything you want, and are not obligated to me in any way, we will have a very difficult social arrangement. As unborn fetuses are not yet capable of engaging in the social contract, as they are incapable of holding any obligations, they are not protected under the rights of those that are. A unborn child cannot follow laws, it cannot engage in any number of the practices and procedures that make up human social relations. The only bond it has is to female who is carrying it to term. She is not providing the necessities of life out her own free will if she does not want to carry the baby to term. As the baby can carry no obligation in exchange for this right, the right is therefore not required to be given if it is not desired so by the mother.

Of course there is! Just don't get caught while obtaining it.

As are legal abortion and murder.
"Thou shall not kill" it does not differentiate between murder and self defense nor abortion and free choice. Killing is killing.

I believe that the commandment was "Thou Shall Not Commit Murder."
I had a problem with this when I was becoming a christian, because I thought it meant that I could not use deadly force when defending myself. They are two different things.

b.k. barunt wrote:Actually "thou shalt not kill" was never changed to "thou shalt not commit murder", as that was the original meaning - there is no record of any of the 10 commandments being "changed" at all. Jesus fulfilled the law, and man is no longer under it, but it's never been "changed" anywhere in the Bible.
The second part is correct however. If one is to follow Jesus then one must follow his example and not defend himself. However, if someone wants to do harm to your wife or child, that is a different matter altogether.

You can look at the different translations and see "murder" or "kill". We would need someone who can read the original transcript to know for sure. "Thou shall not kill" is how I take it.

Jesus said that if you have a lustful though about a woman you have committed adultry in your heart.
He also said that if you have ever had hatred for any man, woman, or child, then you are guilty of murder.
He said that if you have ever covetted someone elses things then you are guilty of theivery.
Also if you tell the smallest of white lies you are guilty of haveing a false testimony.
With just one of these four things you are condemed to hell. I know that i have done all four multiple times in my life and i'm not even an adult yet.
So for us to rank sins is just a human developement.
Truely in God's eyes murder is the same as telling a lie. The end result is the same, you go to hell.
That is unless you take up Jesus's offer of salvation.
Jesus told the man on the cross beside him that he would be with him in paradise that very day. He told the disciples that if you profess with your mouth i will profess you to the father.
Heck you don't have to say anything fancy, you just have to believe that your condemed to hell and that the only way to be clean in god's sight is to take up jesus's offer of salvation and confess these things with your mouth.
