"JPL research scientists concluded the quake shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second)."

Guess you'll just have to have shorter foreplay. ;)
THE DEBATE IS OVER...

So if the earth is moving away from the sun, that means we are in a global cool down not a global warming scenario right??

Not quite probably---since at this rate the atmosphere will be long, exposing the world to UV Rays and toasty death. :D

toasty death sounds somehow too benign in this context

Hey Isaiah, did you know that the real Isaiah was sawed in two? If so, do you know if it was horizontally or vertically?

Which is why we in the northern hemisphere have winter when we are closer to the sun, instead of further away.

While I can appreciate how momentous it is that you actually get a joke (truly, I congratulate you. Kudos!), the amount of time I can, um, shall we say, "tease" my wife before she forces me to get "all up inside her" (as the kids say), is really none of your business. Not even if I know you think you're the first one in this thread to make an attempt at humour regarding the minuscule nature of the apparent time-shift. Although I must say, I am flattered that you continue to make pathetic attempts at personal jabs at me, in multiple threads. While I think that your school-boy-ish crush is cute, in it's own precious little way, I'm sorry to tell you that I'm not attracted to brain-washed, superstitious morons. It would never work, little fella.

That's a joke, right? I mean, we are further from the sun in the winter, but that's not why it's colder.

I fail to see how these little things could possibly have enough power to shift the Earth of Her axis?

You've obviously never tried any of the hotter varieties.

I don't know, some of those dangerously hot ones can be a doozy.

Well, I think we're closest to the sun in about March of every year though I don't know why I remember that. The tilt of the axis (and consequently length of days) is what determines the seasons as you alluded.

Yes, else it'd be winter all over the world at the same time.

Scrap that - March is the equinox but only mid distance for earth-sun.

The earth is closest to the sun in December and furthest from the sun in June.

Hmm.. I wasn't really thinking about the difference in distance, from one time of year to another, due to the non-circular nature of the orbit, but rather the difference in distance, at one time, between the two hemispheres, due to the tilt of the axis. In the winter, the northern hemisphere is tilted away, and thus is further away than the southern hemisphere, and vice-versa.

I'm pretty sure that hardly makes a difference, when you compare the distance to the sun (about 100 million miles) to the diameter of the Earth (8000 miles). The difference in temperature comes about from the length of the days, the length the sun shines on the surface. 8-)

Er... it has more to do with the angle radiation from the sun hits the earth. So the tilt of the earth is the most important factor. For example, by your logic, it would get very warm at the poles when the sun is constantly shining, but it really doesn't.
