Malta map

Post by Navyblue4u »

WOW!!! Ruben, what a gorgeous map. I love the brightly colored one best, easy to figure out bonuses. Unlike Ireland map where you can't figure out the colors very good. I also like the extras. I definitely feel it would be unfair for someone to get that capital bonus from the start of game. But if you had a neutral number on there, that would be better. Not sure about how many to put on it . Think you could get away with 3, but maybe 5 makes it more challenging and special. However, something in my brain says 3. But i'm not sure on that.

I can't wait to play it!!!

The last update still had some things that needed to be worked on, so just wait until Ruben's posted his latested update before making any sort of requests for Final Forge. Not to mention quenching, jumping the gun a bit there!

Map won't show up on my browser for some reason, but I wanted to suggest that everyone start with a capitol city rather than having them all be neutral. In games with fewer starting players than capitols, have the remaining capitols be either neutral or no bonus.
There is no luck, only preparation and execution.

I think this map looks absolutly great.

My only complaint is that the continent names are very long (and include way to many aprostraphes). This will make it very hard to communicate contients to an Ally, and just saying Red, or Grey is fairly inaccurate, because somse of the colours are fairly similar.
I know in the original they were just North, South, East and West, which are fairly boring, but I think these new names are a bit too varied and hard to pronounce.

Maybe the English translations of the province names would be easier for most players to follow

the english translations arent very good....Maltese has arabic in it and believe me it wouldnt make sense...Anyway we have already talked about these names along time ago.....

Maltese is a very old but small language and i think we should accept its culture which is quite unqiue!!!

Actually Maltese is derived from a mixture of mostly Punic (Semitic), Italian, Siculo-Italian and English. I conducted some studies on a university project which were quite interesting.

From a sample I used, around 45% of the words were derived from Italian, 50% from Semitic languages and 5% from English. Most of the words are given a Maltese slant. Example: football = futbol from English or giornata (day) = gurnata from Italian. Most of the new technical words are from English like computer = kompjuter. Older words are derived from Semitic languages reflecting the conquest of Malta by the Carthaginians and later the Arabs before they were driven off by the Normans in 1090AD.

Anyway I doubt any of you are interested in this. However the issue of the Maltese names was discussed in the past. I had used English originally but now I am going to stick with Maltese. And anyway I am half way through the XML using Maltese names so it's not going to change again for sure.

I think it was actually 1091 when the Normans gained control of Malta from the Arabs. Interestingly it was Guiscard's brother, Roger...

As for the names, the original translation is certainly long and a little confusing, but as long as they aren't too long for the drop down menus (I think there was an issue with this in the Benelux or Netherlands map) then it should be fine.

Yes my friend it was 1091. You are well informed. In fact Malta's national flag is actually part of the flag that Count Roger of the Normans used. I didn't know that Guiscard was his brother though. The Normans ruled Malta for roughly 103 years between 1091 and 1194.

The drop down menus will have the names of the cities (territories) and not the "continents " which the other guys were referring to so there shouldn't be a problem with them.

Didn't know about the flag...Roger was one of Tancred de Hauteville's sons, who between them conquered Southern Italy and Sicily. Guiscard made Roger count of Sicily and he went on to extend his rule to Malta, which had the advantage of both upsetting Arab trade interests in the Med and providing a useful stepping stone for later crusading forces.

As for the territory/continent names that's a good point, I was obviously confused about what he meant.

Color Scheme

Post by Quantum_Art »

I think the first map is by far the best....very easy on the eyes, but The northern part of the Large island has very similar colors. Perhaps if the gray was replaced with someother color and the differance in the blues made a litlte sharper it'd work out better.

As far as the 'impassable barrier' idea; I like it alot, however, the mountain and trees seem a bit 'corny' but the dots have a very 'thrown-together' feel. I think the idea suggested about Bold lines would fit the purpose.

I like the Idea of battlng for Malta....can't wait!

(PS. I am a 'noob' and have no idea about the points)

Thanks Mike. I have made some minor graphic amendments but I have not posted them yet as I am still working on the XML.

I am busy with a lot of stuff lately and I have not worked on the XML for a few days. I will post the updated map with the XML when I manage to finish it. I find the XML part very boring so it is taking me ages to finish. :(
