Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
12 v 12 and losing 10 guys and killing 2 is why CC is fun to me. Oh wait, that's why its not fun anymore.
Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
CC is still fun because there is so much to do
-Go for medals!
-Win some tournaments!
-Cross map all maps!
-Join a clan!
-Or just cry about dice in the forum!

Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
CC is fun because its that nice 5 minute distraction from whatever now and again in the day. Have by far the most fun in fog games om large maps. Its all about the uncertainty of whats going on out there, reading the log and trying to proceed by logic. Diplomacy is what the core of the fun really is. Wheeling and dealing, misrepresenting your strength and not having your bluff called. Trying to manipulate the entire map then having everyone fall on you from every side. Its all fun. No fog esc games just don't quite do it for me though I still play em.
The thing about risk is that it is unlike most other PC based wargames in which a Very Strong Army will always beat a Very Weak Army. Not so in risk in which we must be content that it will "probably" beat that army. And considering YOUR luck (thats right I mean YOU!) that Strong Army will probably just evaporate without causing any damage at all. Your armies probably even evaporate while you sleep at night for no reason, quick check your games!
But thats just the nature of the beast and the game is still good fun. The uncertainty of it all even adds flavour in a good way. The game comes with a fitting title.
For anyone getting weary of dice luck I would strongly recommend taking up chess if you haven't already. It's a game with absolutely zero luck and all about pressure, a magnificent game. Ton of places to play it both browser and software based. Personally I play it on yahoo they got a nice ranking system and setup there. After I played enough games to find my rank I can most always be certain that a higher ranked player WILL wipe the board with me and that any lower ranked player is generally easily fended off. Beating a high ranked player there is always cause for a big sh*t-eating grin.
Not that chess is a better game, the two having what the other lacks.

My clan keeps me here.
And the fact I get all the good dice you guys don't.
That's what made me a Colonel, when I actually should be a Cook. In my clan no one would argue that fact. I'm just getting lucky consistently.
And that's why all the great players are leaving the site. Such a shame.

Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
i've been here a few years now, and the last 4 months i have been working in alaska with very little time to play c.c. I am surprised to see that now when i do get 2 weeks off of work, i am no longer a C.C. addict, I used to have 60+ games going at all times and i have no idea how many speed games i have played, now i pretty much play in my clans games, I was a colonel for a while, and held major for quite a bit, but over the past 4 months have dropped steadily to sargeant/liutenant. Random dice my ass. and the fact that lackattack seems not to have time to run this site properly is a dissapointment. perhaps premium player retention isnt as important as one might think. I would be curious to see #'s on long term premium retention vs new player premiums that stay less than 2 years.

Yes, the randomness does contribute to the excitement that you won't find in chess. And I wouldn't want CC to eliminate that excitement. However, I detect a groundswell of interest in adjusting CC's luck/skill balance a little more toward the skill side. Now that there are enough combinations of game settings, you can find one you're good at and be the best in that category. If we tilt the balance toward skill, you'll advance in rank more often by developing skill in your chosen setting category than by lucky streaks.
I've explained in other threads how use of the Axis and Allies dice system (one die for each army) can neutralize the streakiness and thereby tilt the luck/skill balance. Now its time to start a grass roots movement to get Lack to take notice and put it to a vote. Only question is how to start.

The beauty of risk is it's simplicity. 3 dice versus 2, with a slight advantage to the attacker and a few straightforward gameplay rules, leading to a multitude of possibilities. I've played a number of wargames with more complex attack/defense/movement systems and they all tend to have fewer possibilities of outcome, often from quite early in the game and much less chance to recover from a bad position.
What a lot of people posting in threads like this seem to want is a system that is weighted heavily in favour of the attacker and the bigger stack. That isn't risk, it's some other game.
If you want a game like that play "realtime risk" a variant that heavily favours the attacker and the big stack. I think it's less fun but each to their own. There are a multitude of wargames that have less reliance on dice, chess being the ultimate example - as already mentioned - all skill, no luck.
This is a site for playing risk, a game mixing skill and luck, and i hope it remains such.

Because Monopoly is boring... unless you play with both sides of the board.

Pretty accurate for me besides #7. I'm starting to like tourneys more and more, though. It's the best way to make sure you play a diverse bunch of good (if not at least competent) teams.

April, when I finished getting my medals.
But I never really played 8-man Esc, nor did I truly farm 1v1s. My rank was never above Major, and it was sometimes even below Lieutenant.
At some point, maybe 6 months from now, maybe several years - I will go back to speed games and farm for points to reach General.
It is the last great challenge for me, and I need to know whether or not I can do it.
You're right, though - right now, Speed Freestyle is not a reason why CC is fun for me, because I don't play it. However, it does interest me, and I will get to it at some point.

you really should play the 8 mans, they are so much fun though hard to learn so you need to be willing to lose points at first
Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
I have to agree the dice are extremely unbalanced lately.. CC is no longer fun when they promote a game that is so unbalanced.. And then that time is near again to renew and i ponder wether i shall or shall not.. Based on the recent changes to dice i am leaning towards ney.. Especially when you notice a pattern while rolling . the all of sudden glitch whil;e rolling.. What does it all mean

Let me give you my dice file, danrank. Or maybe I can get a General's for you. It'll be our (public) secret.
Edit: BigMeanie may need some (public) secrets too.

CC is still fun because I make it so. I could have a totally un-fun time on CC, but why would I want to do that? I've never been into masochism.

cc is still fun?
i must be addicted. thats the only reason i see myself coming back here.
why else would i keep coming back to something so irritating, so infuriating. i don't even look forward to taking my turns nowadays!
i know all the devout dice defenders will tell me i just dont understand or something like that. regardless, i've kept it in for too long, so i must ask:
if the odds of absolute junk dice (e.g. losing 6 units in 6 straight 4v1 attacks) occurring as are as low as they are, why do these junk dice seem to happen so often? i mean, its like an everyday thing. sign on to cc, open a game, get totally screwed over, log off, repeat. the amount of units i am losing these days against measly 1s is just ridiculous.
the end.

Re: Why is CC fun? (still)
Isn't it a bit sad that even a thread on the positive bits of CC has been taken over as a dice moan. The things that make CC fun still for me are:
1) being able to play 70 games at a time against real people
2) all the goals you can set yourself - medals, tournaments, challenges
3) getting beaten by someone of a lower rank who genuinely earns it (not too often though!)
4) beating someone of a higher rank
5) the amazing job of all the volunteers on the site - the mods who actually do a pretty good job, the mapmakers who have made some truly impressive maps, the tournament organisers, and everyone else that contributes to CC that we usually forget to thank

Technically, this thread actually did originate as a "dice moan."

It sure as hell isn't the random generator.
All bitching aside, it really takes the fun out of the game, the site and what little time I still invest in CC these days.

Because hundreds of thousands of dice are thrown each day on this site? So the "odds that shouldn't happen so often" tend to happen way more often.

I like teaching new players.
I like some the private forums (e.g. usergroups). I don't come here much; it seems like too many people get banned so I just avoid the public fora.
I like playing clan games.
Also I still find collecting medals gives me something to do, regardless of how pointless they may be. They do force me to play new game types which makes the game interesting.
Learning new maps can be fun, but I only tryout one or two at a time, so I'll never know them all, but it is fun.
Spam is fun, but like I said it can only be done in private uesrgroups where people have a sense of humor

For me, the bad dice seem to come and go on regular occasion. Except AoR2, in which case they come but never seem to go
