Post by Tupence »

Welcome to the 2012 Olympic Games!

Quick Links to individual sports:

Archery, Athletics
Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Canoeing
Cycling, Diving, Equestrian, Fencing
Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Modern Pentathlon
Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming
Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon
Volleyball, Water Polo, Weightlifting, Wrestling

Registration has fully closed; teams can no longer be edited.

This is a Large Team tournament, with a lot of games for everyone. Teams with between 8 and 20 players will be accepted; however it is highly recommended that you have at least 12 players on your team.

EDIT: This tournament is now fully open to individual sign-ups. See the end of this post for more details.
EDIT: There will be 3 General Achievement Medals available. See "Prizes" below for more details.

Players MUST be premium, and have at least 97% attendance.

This tournament lends itself well to clans, so invite your clan-mates to form a team, but it is not exclusively for clans; all premium teams are welcome. If you’re not in a clan and would like to play, why not join forces with another quads team?

The tournament will follow the format of each of the events of the London 2012 Olympic Games, with some inspiration from the Beijing Olympics for events where full details are not yet available.
The winning team will be the team which has earned the most Gold Medals at the end of the Games. In the case of a tie, Silver Medals will be taken into account, then Bronze Medals.

Each member of the winning team will earn a Tournament Achievement Medal.

There will also be 3 General Achievement medals available:

 • 1 for the player who contributed* the most Gold Medals to their team (regardless of whether or not their team wins the tournament)**
 • 1 for the winner of the Men's Marathon (Athletics) - this is the event which will have the most competitors
 • 1 for the winner of the Men's Decathlon (Athletics) - in real life the winner of this event is often named "World's Greatest Athlete"

* This will not always be a whole number; for example a member of a winning Quads team will have contributed 0.25 Gold Medals
** The player and team must remain in the tournament until it finishes in order to win the medal. In the case of a tie, the most Silver Medals will be taken into account, followed by the most Bronze Medals.

All games will be Automatic, Escalating and Chained.

Only two of the Shooting events involve Freestyle games; all other games will be Sequential.

Individual events will be Standard, and team events such as Football and Hockey will be Doubles, Triples or Quadruples. There will be no Terminator or Assassin games.

Events marked as Men’s will have Fog; events marked as Women’s will have No Fog. Mixed events will also have No Fog.
Teams should nominate a Team Captain and a 2nd in Command. All communications between myself and the team will go through the Team Captain, and should the Team Captain be unavailable (e.g. on vacation) any communications will be sent to the 2nd in Command.
Teams that are from one clan will find it useful to have a thread in their private clan forum to discuss who will play each event.
If a member of your team drops out or becomes freemium, it will be up to you to find a replacement, or share the games between the rest of the team. If the team drops below 8 members and you do not find a replacement player, be prepared to have another player added to your team as a result of a request by me in the Reserves Thread (in the Create/Join sub-forum).

Once a player drops out of the team and is replaced, the player cannot come back to the tournament. I will keep track of who has already played and dropped out of the tournament.

Unlike some of my other tournaments, I will not fill in for any team. If a player drops out mid-event, their upcoming games in that event will be forfeited.

A record will be taken of all players’ scores when registration closes. These will be the scores used to seed players and teams (most events are seeded). As the tournament will be long, these scores may be updated at some point. However, this will not be done as a result of players’ requests; it will be done randomly to ensure impartiality.

The tournament will be broken down into “Days”, which correspond to the format of the real Olympic Games. Before each “Day” begins, I will send a request form to all Team Captains, asking for names of players for each event.
All teams must enter at least 1 player (or 1 team in a team event) for each event; the maximum entries will be outlined in the request form. It is not guaranteed that all of your nominated players will get to partake in the event; when an event is over-subscribed, only the highest ranked players will get to take part.
If an event is under-subscribed, teams who have sent in the fewest players will be asked to assign an extra player to the event.
All games will be sent out using the invite method. If a player does not join a game within 3 invitations (unless they have alerted me that they will be away beforehand) the player will forfeit their place in the event. If a player does not show up for a team game, the team will have 48 hours to find a replacement before the team forfeits the game.
Important Tournament Notice

The data for ALL of my tournaments has potentially been lost. I am working to recover it but as I am away on business all of this week, there will be some delay. Sincere apologies.

4 Events: Men's Team, Women's Team, Men's Individual, Women's Individual

All events will be played on the Castle Lands map.

Players enter as individuals for Men's and/or Women's event - the first round is a seeding round which is also used as a qualifier for the Team events.

The Men's and Women's events are identical in format.

Seeding Round

All 64 players will each play two sets of 3 games. All games in this stage will be 8-player. Points are awarded based on a formula combining the number of rounds, finishing position and the number of eliminations. A maximum of 120 points for each game is available (120 is scored by winning a game in 5 rounds or less, and eliminating all opponents).

Players' scores are totaled (out of a maximum 720 points) and then placed into a 64-player seeded bracket for the Individual events.

The 16 teams whose 3 players give the highest combined score will qualify for the Team events.

Team Events

The 16 teams will be placed into a 16-team seeded bracket. In each round, each player will play three 1v1 games; one against each player on the opposing team.

Points are awarded according to a formula based on the number of rounds in which the player wins or loses. A maximum of 30 points is available for each game (by winning in 4 rounds or less). Therefore, each team can get up to 270 points in a match.

In each match, the team with the most points goes forward to the next round. To win the Gold Medal, a team must win 4 out of 4 matches.

Individual Events

The 64 players will be placed into a 64-player seeded bracket. In each round, players will play four 1v1 games against one opponent.

Points are awarded according to a formula based on the number of rounds in which the player wins or loses. A maximum of 30 points is available for each game (by winning in 4 rounds or less). Therefore, each player can get up to 120 points in a match.

In each match, the player with the most points goes forward to the next round. To win the Gold Medal, a player must win 6 out of 6 matches.

Athletics

47 Events - List of events and maps can be found below.
All events have 1 Men's and 1 Women's event except the Race Walk where there are 2 Men's events and 1 Women's. The Decathlon is the Men's equivalent of the Heptathlon for Women.

In all events except the High Jump and Pole Vault, times/distances will be worked out using a formula that combines the player's finishing position, the number of rounds the game finishes in, how many rounds behind the winner a player is and the number of eliminations a player makes. Times/distances will also be weighted very slightly by the total scores of players in the game. This is to reward players who have played a tougher game against stronger opponents.

The Men's and Women's events are identical in format.

Each event has 12 teams, which are placed into 2 groups of 6 teams.

The first stage is a Round Robin stage, so each team will play 5 games against different teams. The Top 4 teams from each group go through to the Quarter Finals.

From here each event will be a standard 8-team bracket, with the winning team going through. From this stage to win the Gold Medal a team will win 3 out of 3 matches.

The Top 2 3rd-place teams will also go through. The other 4 3rd-place teams will play off against each other (3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th) with the winning teams also going through to Round 2.

From here each event will be a standard 16-team bracket, with the winning team going through. From this stage to win the Gold Medal a team will win 4 out of 4 matches.

2 Events: Men's and Women's.

Both events will take place on the South America map.

The Men's event will have 16 Quads teams, the Women's event will have 12 Quads teams.

Match scores will be worked out using the following formulae:

Losing team's score = Number of players on Winning team eliminated

Winning team's score = Losing team's score + (8 - number of rounds)

Therefore, a game that takes 8 rounds or more will be classed as a draw.*

*In the Bracket stage of the competition, a game that finishes in 8, 9 or 10 rounds will mean that the winning team has scored a goal in Extra Time. If the game goes to 11 rounds or more, Penalties will be issued based on the teams' previous records in the event (1 penalty scored per game won). If the teams are still equal, overall goal difference in the event will be used as a tie-breaker.

Men's

Preliminaries

Teams will be placed into 4 groups of 4 teams. Each group will play a round-robin, so every team will play 3 games. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The Top 2 teams in each group go through to the Bracket. If a tie occurs, goal difference will be taken into account.

Bracket

8 teams will play a standard bracket (Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Finals). From here the team who win the Gold will win 3 out of 3 games. Losers of the Semi Finals will play against each other for the Bronze.

Women's

Preliminaries

Teams will be placed into 3 groups of 4 teams. Each group will play a round-robin, so every team will play 3 games. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The Top 2 teams in each group and the best 2 3rd-place teams go through to the Bracket. If a tie occurs, goal difference will be taken into account.

Bracket

In each event, players' times will be worked out using a formula that combines the player's finishing position, the number of rounds the game finishes in, how many rounds behind the winner a player is and the number of eliminations a player makes. In each event except the Elliott event, games will be played in pairs. Groups will be swapped around (seeded based on success in the event so far) between each pair of games. In the Elliott event, groups will be swapped around between every game.

In all events, points are awarded per position; 1st place gets 1 point, 2nd place gets 2 points etc.*
All events except the 49er have 10 games + a Medal Race. Each player's/team's worst result from the 10 games will not be counted.
The 49er event has 15 games + a Medal Race. Each player's worst 2 results from the 15 games will not be counted.

At the end of the 10 (or 15) games, the 10 players with the lowest total will play the Medal Race (one game). Points from this game are doubled and added to the previous total. Top 3 players/teams earn medals.

Thanks for the sign-ups so far everyone, you can of course edit your team as much as you like until registration closes. I will send a message to all Team Captains a few days before it closes so that you can finalise your teams.

There won't be a fog rule; there will be too many games going on to check for things like that. From my experience, most players don't mind if the unwritten "fog rule" is broken, so I don't expect it to cause any problems.

I'll put your name on the list of players without teams, should we need more teams to fill the tournament.
