Can I fight for William the Conqueror? If that's inappropriate (after all, he was French), I'll settle for Idwal :)

You can. William wasn't French, though, he was Norman. There was a pretty definite distinction, at least as early as this. Edward and Alfred, who were killed by Edmund Ironside in the previous tournament, were kinsmen of William, so we could say he attempted an invasion of England to avenge them.

William didn't get very far with that, though.
He was embroiled in a civil war in Normandy. For now that took his attention away from England. Maybe he would return after settling his unruly vassals.
