i still support this, though unfortunately last time it ended up in the rejected suggestions forum: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=471&t=123147&p=2706293&hilit=hide+status#p2706293

The only problem with this is that it would require a phpbb upgrade and not a CC upgrade.

Online Status for Friends ONLY [Poll Added]

Post by Funkyterrance »

Some sort of patch that allows your online status to be visible to friends but otherwise invisible

Would enable those who want to let their clan-mates/friends know when they are online but won't be visible to spammers, etc.

Pretty straightforward really. My clan-mates and I were discussing why some hide their online status but we all realized that we would never mind if clan-mates knew we were on, for obvious reasons. For the record I don't ever hide my online status but am speaking for my clan as a whole. If this has been suggested before, please direct me.

Thanks for reading,

It's a good suggestion, but I think is better that instead of clans, the one who can see are the ones you have add as friend. It would make that feature useful.

Either one would be fine as far as I'm concerned, whichever had a better chance of being enacted lol. I've got no real preference.

You can already see if your friends are online, even if they hide their status.

I think.

Just go to the control panel and on the left side, you'll see all your friends. If they are at the top, and in a bold font, they are online.

I don't think that's true.

I have some people in my friend's list that hide their status and I never see them online, even when I know for a fact that they are online.

Oh. I guess the people I see don't have it hidden. I thought that they did.

I wholeheartedly agree with this proposal, offline to all, friends only, and public.

But that (wich luckily is false) is the contrary, because anyone can see if you are only, they just need to add you as friend. What I said was the contrary, the people who can see you online, is the one you have add, not the other way around.

I think that something like this might have been proposed a couple months ago, but I don't have time to search for it...

Basically, I'm in favor with one change. You must each be friends with each other. So, you can't have someone just add you as a friend and them be able to see you. It must be mutual.

I don't think many would object to this stipulation.

no, in fact you should not be able to hide your online status at all. Hiding is weak. Considering we do not want to get trolled by our employer/spose/ whatever i can see that the site feels they are required to allow the option, but to allow friends to see you (as the next op is going to should) is basicly weak.
hiding your online status will only be used for some 'competetive ' edge, particular with freestyle and or speed games. Again, this should be counted as abuse of the gamesystem.
But if the option to hide should stay, then do not ever allow it to be shared with "friends".
It is either hide from all, or not at all.

Would to OP approve of changing the suggestion to "friends" instead of clans and making the appropriate changes to the OP and the title?

If it means an increased chance of it being considered, sure.

Lol, thanks for that somewhat emotional reply. It's nice to hear your opinion but I feel it was a bit hasty. Hiding status could have various reasons.

please do not mutilate my quotes with your interjections.
Also, sure they can have legitimate reasons. Maybe you need glasses to read the lines again, but I actually wrote that down too. Any of those legitimate reasons end the second you only allow friends to see you online, since then it will be used as a tactical advantage.
But I am open for motivated contradictions, so show me those examples and reasons. All various kinds of them.

Fixed, buddy. ;)
No need for the sarcasm either, its inappropriate to the suggestions forum. I would appreciate it if you edited your post and remained professional.
An example of an instance where you would have your online status publicly hidden would be during a game you needed to know whether or not your partner was online and whether or not you could contact him/her or not. He/she may not mind his partner contacting him but would rather not be bothered by anyone else. This instance has nothing to do with tactics.

Any of the tech guys know if this is a phpbb thing? If so, do they have this option available?

How about wall or pming someone. Trying his phone number might work, aim..
There are a lot of ways to contact someone. Why do you need the added advantage to hide from your opponants?
As i said, there are legitimate reasons, like being cyber stalked, but hiding is basicly weak. You motivation does not disprove that.

One advantage, quite simply, is it would save time. Also, what you perceive as hiding could be considered by another as right to privacy. Furthermore, just because someone would like to know when their conquer club friends are online doesn't mean they want to bring them into the realm of their IM world, certainly not their private phone number.
I don't believe this improvement would encourage any kind of abuse. Your opinion about "hiding" is just that, an opinion. The insinuation has little to do with the usefulness of the suggestion from what I can see.
