ThE aRcTiC cHiLl

Post by mrswdk »

Just wondered...

Who's living in one of the areas hit by the BIG FREEZE?

What's it like inside your houses? Aren't most of them only built for a country where the mercury usually bottoms out at -3 or -4? How are you dealing with it? Cranking the heaters up to max and leaving it like that 24/7? Having to wear coats to bed?

My igloo is in no danger of melting this year, unlike the past couple of winters.

The only chill I'm feeling is a mild flu bug
and I feel lucky it's not the BIG bug.

Temps around here have been single digit
with only the chill factor below zero.

It is strange to see New Orleans, Houston
and San Antonio below freezing.

Celsius uses larger increments when measuring... So, unless you want to always have to use decimal points, Fahrenheit gives you a more accurate reading... My wife is a microbiologist and we were just arguing about this on the way to work this morning... It's like using a Meter to measure something when you could use Feet... Smaller increments give you more exactness without having to use fractions and decimals!

Perhaps we should change the counting system to something other than decimal based.

Maybe 12 is a nice number for the first stage. Then I would recommend 3 for the next stage. 1760 is the ideal number for the next group.

if you want something more scientific use kelvins, no scientist uses farenheits.
A mesure that uses 0 for "water freezes" and a 100 for "water boils" in earthly pressures is pretty much as logic, comprehensive, straight forward, smart and common sensed as it can get. Also the whole world could understand you if you used it.

if i tell you 90°F or 91°F is it really different? like if you tell me 30°c or 30,5°.
In fact when you wonder about the temperature you never know exactly what it is. why would you need to be more precise than the celsius scale to express every day life temepratures?? On the air conditioner of my car it goes by half degree celsius to change temperature. that's more precise that a degree farenheit lol.

and the foot argument doesn't make sense either... use centimeters or decimeters or whatever you want. Any fraction of a number based on the decimal system makes more sense than your prehistorical system.

It was -52c with wind chill the other day where I live. Everything remained open and life went on as usual, except I wore a toque when I went to work...

Celsius is best, everyone knows it.

So what's it like inside your houses during the cold weather?

I live somewhere that is generally fairly cold this time of year, but we've had daily highs above freezing (take that arguers, doesn't matter what scale I'm using now) for the past few days, with the forecast saying it will continue at least another 5 days. On Tuesday it's supposed to get above 10. That's 50-ish for those of you using archaic measurement systems (damn it, now I've joined them).

Cold is cold. 0ºF is colder than C.

Not sure if cold is actually a thing though,
since it is actually the absence of heat.

You could use the Kelvin scale.
