USA & Britain's Armies Divorce

Post by iAmCaffeine »

So apparently the USA is saying that because of military cuts in Britain the two countries will no longer be 'married' with their armies. Whilst at the same time the USA says they couldn't fight two wars at once any more due to weapons etc price increases.

Maybe they could separate via anullment? Maybe not, the USA have fucked our troops up the arse enough times as it is..

From Britain's perspective I'd encourage the separation. I doubt we'd have wasted our time in Iraq or Afghanistan if we weren't 'married' to the US Army.

The wheel turns slowly from radicalism to the mainstream ...

In 1965 Malcolm X wrote:America is subsidizing what is left of the prestige and strength of the once mighty Britain. The sun has set forever on that monocled, pith-helmeted resident colonialist. Britain's superfluous royalty and nobility now exist by charging tourists to inspect the once baronial castles, and by selling memoirs, perfumes, autographs, titles, and even themselves.

In 1976 Gen. Scratchley Brown wrote:They're no longer a world power. All they've got left are generals, admirals, and bands.

In 2014 Robert Gates wrote:What we’re finding is they won’t have full spectrum capabilities and the ability to be able to be a full partner.

Sort of- it comes into effect in a couple of months.

Obama's foreign policy is starting to pay dividends. Perhaps he should send the Queen a lump of coal this time

We'll sure be glad not to have to worry about 'friendly fire' so much.

It's been legal since May 2010.

Give it a few years and Malcolm X no longer seems so radical.

We stopped being a world power long before 1976,and the US hasn't seen us as a full partner in even longer.

Come now Chang, you give us the moral authority and wow power of a prince in combat, that must be worth something?

Not to mention that the UK flag is totes cool, and can keep you looking awesome even when you're splattering towel heads on dubious pretexts.

There's a popular saying that the Russian Navy has been on the verge of collapse for the last 300 years. If you drop a zero, that seems to also describe predictions of the U.S.' collapse. Drop another zero and it's the euro currency. People tend to predict the collapse of things they want to see collapse without much attention to realpolitik.

And as long as Robert Plant continues to be a jerk and prevent a Led Zep reunion, they don't even have bands.

The US has been pre-eminent since 1945,reaching their peak with the long planned for downfall of the USSR,which curiously didn't usher in a period of further US strength. When they are overtaken and by whom is anybody's guess, but any observer can see it is a hopelessly divided nation whose best days are history. No rash predictions here..

I think Cameron had a pretty good point in that he said the US is the world's #1 economy and has the #1 defense budget; the UK is the world's #8 economy and has the #4 defense budget.

In FP today it said the final level of the U.S. (active) army after the drawdown is finished is going to be 420,000. If the UK army is 120,000, it appears it's 20% larger than the U.S., adjusted for population. The funding difference, it seems, comes from the UK's reliance on off-the-shelf weapons while the U.S. insists on custom-everything. The U.S.' insistence on custom weapons requires a base of foreign customers to subsidize R&D which is probably the benefit of the NATO standardization process, it creates a stable of forced-customers in Europe. The U.S. has a vested interest in making sure European defense budgets are kept artificially high so that they can maintain their corner on the whole arms market, instead of having to specialize in just a few systems like other big weapons exporters (e.g. Sweden and naval artillery).

Most pundits think China and it's hard to disagree, but they have their own problems for sure. They are exerting a lot of influence over developing countries in Africa especially,ie empire building. Will be interesting to see how the party manages rising domestic expectations and dissent.

Probably just propaganda that will be used to scare UK after they backed out of Syria.

And who cares if we divorce the UK, our alliance with Israel is "eternal."
