Say on the Classic map you hold Sydney. From Sydney you can assault Perth and/or Port Moseby. Say you assault and take Perth advancing all. That is the end of your assaults with those troops , you cannot now go on to assault Jakarta from Perth, nor can you use the troops you advanced to Perth to attack Port Moresby.

With trench warfare you can only assault from regions held continuously since the start of your turn. If you conquer a region (or re-conquer a region) you cannot assault further from that region during the same turn.
