This is called pushing borders.
Each player starts with 4 virtual territories. They form a circle being neighbor with the player to the right and to the left. Each round, every player fight their neighbors in 1v1 games. The winner of each 1v1 game steal a territory to his neighbor.
There is also a special neutral territory in the middle of the virtual map which everyone are neighbor to. Each round, every player alive will also fight for the middle in 1 freestyle 20 rounds limit game. The winner of the battle for the middle ground will control it, which gives him the power to bombard a player next round. The player must to choose a target and attempt to bombard him, which will be done in a 1v1 game. If the bombarding player wins the 1v1, the target lose a territory which cannot be gained back. There is no penalty for failing a bombardment.
At the end of each round, every players lose 1 territory, except the player who won the middle ground. When a player lost all his territories, he is out of the tournament. The last one to survive wins the tournament.
Specific rules:
When a player drops from the tournament or lose all his territories, his 2 neighbors become neighbors themselves, closing the virtual circle. This makes it unnecessary to have players in reserves.
When a player hold for the middle ground he will bombard someone next round. During the next round there will still be the fight for the middle ground and this game can happen at the same time than the game for the bombardment, the 2 are not conflicting with each other.
If there are only 2 players left alive, they will border each other to the right and to the left, meaning that they will fight 2 games each round to try to steal territories from each other. They will also fight the freestyle battle for the middle ground, and the winner will try to bombard the other player next round. This means that they will fight a total of 4 games with each other every round until the end of the tournament.
If there are more than 12 players alive in the tournament, the middle ground will be split into 2 territories. The players will also be split into 2 territories and fight into 2 separate freestyle games. The winner of each game will be entitled a bombardment as usual, meaning that there will be 2 bombardments.
If a player owns only 1 territory and both his neighbors win the game against him, they both gain a territory. Which mean that a territory is created.
If a player wins the middle ground but loses all his territories during the same round, he will not be able to bombard during the next round as he is eliminated.
If the 2 last players are eliminated at the same time, they will fight in one last game to determine who is the winner. The settings of that game will be the same as all the 1v1 games. In case of 3 or more players, the settings of the tiebreaker game will be the same but standard instead of polymorphic so that all the players can join the same game.

If the visual example is too big for your resolution, you can save it to view it out of your browser instead.
