10 Years Ago Today...

Post by stringybeany »

I found and joined this site.

I wish it were as alive and active as it was back then, but it's not, and honestly I am half dead now also. Almost sixty and discovering that I am quickly becoming a relic of the past. After all, who needs a sixteen bit machine code programmer these days?... Pretty much no one.

Oh well. :-)

game, anyone?

Veterans of the site have things to offer too. Surely, after ten years experience you can offer your wisdom to the forums. I'm personally not happy about certain changes in the rules that seem more counter-productive than inviting. Still I argue away.

Replying to the OP,

It's been over eleven years for me and while I do feel very much alive at one week minus 62, it does seem very much like most everyone else in the real world is done with me....lol

I am an attorney and have worked at the same firm for over 25 years. That part is okay, but about five years ago I bought a home in Utah, a thousand miles from LA, and applied for jobs at firms in Utah. After 2 years of applications I got exactly one interview, from a friend of a friend. No one whatsoever has any interest in hiring anyone over 55.

I have also noticed that I have turned almost invisible at stores and restaurants. No wonder we have the cranky old man sterotype. I'm pissed at how little respect I get.....lol

Because in North America people are taught to respect money and strength. Few respect a person with wisdom and experience. Pretty sad in my opinion. I try to teach my spawn that seniors deserve respect. I hope one day it clicks with them.

Not much has changed, Symmetry goes looking for something that isn't an issue, to get outraged about. Then when offered the chance to help solve the non problem he has confected, begs off as not able or willing. He essentially is good for the economy by trying to create work for others. Look up Symmetry and the Olympic games, is a highly amusing read.

Two weeks ago I got a Seniors' Discount in a restaurant for the first time. I don't actually qualify, but I wasn't about to argue. Take less of my loot? Here, let me help you with that!

I am 6 months short of 62 and disagree with you about the real world.

I changed jobs just over 3 years ago. Get out of your comfort zone and change careers.

Again I will disagree. As far as stores are concerned must national stores are under staffed and under paid. I feel if that locally owned stores are friendlier. As far a restaurants go, if the server treats you as if you are invisible speak with your wallet. Any tip is decided by you and you don't have to go back there. It is your choice.

at 62, you old folk qualify for the lifetime America the Beautiful Senior Pass ! It's only $10 and gets you into every federal facility in the U.S. Its a hell of a deal and the price is going up to $80, so find your nearest facility that sells them and go get one. Get an RV, go explore, go camp, get outside.
