Call me Shirley, but the problem here, is that trump has proved to be suffering from severe dementia throughout the past 4 years, while biden only probably has it. But I don't think he suffers from the Duning Kruger effect as Trump does, nor that Poutine has his peepee tapes. Re: Congrats on Joe Biden! USA's 46th president
Call me Shirley, but the other day a poll said that biden had 3 times hilary's advance 4 month away. So yeah.. hilary did lose, but she had more votes... the big difference also was that neither trump nor hilary were in power and couldn't be blamed about anything happening. Today trump still has to be president of a country in super crisis, and things keep going terribly wrong. Biden can just sit on a bench and watch trump showering in gas next to a bondfire.2dimes wrote:I already alluded to that. I was bracing for impact on Election Day. Re: Congrats on Joe Biden! USA's 46th president
So, I want to have a serious inquiry here. Everything Trump related aside, only talking about Biden and his campaign alone.
Even policies aside, I don't think there is a dispute that his mental health is declining, and the person he chooses for VP has a decent chance to become President if Biden wins. In my view, Biden's campaign would then focus on empowering the VP candidate more than in previous years due to the health of Biden: a atypical campaign strategy. Or maybe they completely ignore Biden's mental health altogether.
I'm curious as to what draws people to him. Is it because they hate Trump so much they will vote for him by default or do people like him because of his policy, knowing he is declining mentally?
List of attributes that have been presented in the discussion thusfar as to why someone would vote for Biden:

I'm not American so I won't be invited to vote in your election, but yes. Balanced against all of Trump's flaws, a case of mild senility is pretty small potatoes. I think a great many people would have someone other than Biden as their first choice, but if they didn't get their first choice, they'd be willing to vote for almost anyone to beat Trump.Jdsizzleslice wrote:I'm curious as to what draws people to him. - I think the vast majority of people who check “Biden” in November will be the mass of sheep who just vote “Democrat” no matter what.
(Don’t get me wrong, there are a nearly equivalent number of people who do the same for “Republican”.
- There are a number of people who put their ‘blinders’ on and don’t acknowledge or recognize the serious mental decline.
These people remember Joe from his younger day’s and attributes his gaffes to his personality. He’s always been kinda loose with his talk and has been prone to putting his foot in his mouth, so these people point to these older instances, and ignore the fact that he;s getting weirder and his nonsense is more frequent.
- Then there are the people who are aware he’s losing it, but are hoping to get through “Weekend at Bernies” style. This group doesn’t care how they win or who wins, they just want Trump to lose.
There are probably other reasons, right? I think you nailed the main one’s, except for just the ‘blind masses’ one.
The problem is that the last group couldn’t coalesce around another Candidate, and the first two groups leaned towards Joe because of his name recognition and history with the Party.
It’s sad and dangerous... potentially even more dangerous than another Trump Term.
We got through it with Regan, so there’s no reason to think we would survive another brain-dead President.

I don't really have any great insights into the process other than what's already been publicly discussed. He's a moderate liberal, seen as being capable of appealing to both moderate liberals and to moderate conservatives. Decades of his Senate performance show him as favouring centrist compromise. I think a lot of people are distressed about the growing polarization in American politics, and I think they have hopes that a moderate voice could help heal the rift.Jdsizzleslice wrote:But he won the Democrat Primary, so clearly there are a great many people that want specifically him as compared to the other candidates.Dukasaur wrote:I'm not American so I won't be invited to vote in your election, but yes. His appeal is that he has in spades what Trump lacks. I say this from a dispassionate place and I'm not trying to say either is better or worse in the post... but many people would say one of Trump biggest character flaws is 'lack of empathy', and this is probably where Biden scores better than just about anyone who ran in the primary. If Trump wasn't running, and it was another republican I truly believe Biden would never have won the nomination... but right time, right place.Jdsizzleslice wrote:But he won the Democrat Primary, so clearly there are a great many people that want specifically him as compared to the other candidates.Dukasaur wrote:I'm not American so I won't be invited to vote in your election, but yes. I think most people would agree George Bush had like no personality or sense of fun/approach-ability when he spoke. Clinton came out of nowhere and won the Dem nomination in part because he had like an approach-ability/swagger/personality GB lacked.
That's my take anyway, specifically on what his appeal is to average mostly non-politically minded or educated people... the ones who tend to make the difference in close elections and vote on personality traits rather than policy. I think what Duku said also holds alot of relevance and weight specifically in regards to the primary and why he had appeal over the rest of the field who were almost all 'further to the left'. Dems proved with their votes they wanted a uniter (of the country, not the party), and not someone who was just going to be a lefty demagogue (mirror of trump from the other side).

1) Random tweets that conflict with his Cabinet and official statements coming out of the White House.
2) Confrontational language with other World Leaders that have worsened US relations and have potentially more serious consequences.
3) Misinformation about the Covid-19 virus coming directly from the Presidential lips.
4) Escalation of partisan rhetoric, already way too high before Trump, now escalated to levels not seen in my lifetime and probably not seen since the Civil War.
5) Downplaying of obvious racist groups and racist segments of Trump support base.
6) Illegal activities within the White House staff and general blurring of the line between what’s right/wrong and behavior that’s acceptable/unacceptable.
7) Ignoring scientific fact in regards to Climate Change.
I could go on if I sat here and thought about it... of course you’ll deny all this anyway.

Not american either but I agree with that. Every time I hear a trump speach... He's the typical guy that does everything by gut feeling... and he's been wrong so many times in his business and personal life with that attitude.... but for him everything is a win.
He respects so much dictators because that's his wet dream (no pun). The guy really wants to run the entire show and would never accept advice from experts because he knows better.... the guy is the opposite of wise.
I really don't understand why people need to be so die hard "republicans" or "democrats".... a democracy only works if power alternates between "general well being" and "individual freedom". It's always about compromising between both things and to keeps as much people happy and productive, never about making part of your population miserable.
It's absolutely impossible to make all ends meet, everything is about compromise, deal with a situation you are left with, the challenges your nation will face within a global economy. Every time you take a decision people will be unpleased. But if you take you decision thinking that you are doing it for the greater good, given all the elements you have in hand, and even if it's counter productive for your own self... well you are doing a good job. If you use your position for your own benefit and the ones of your inmediate circles then you are a corrupt POS. I think that most democracies are flawed because in order to get in power, you need to sell your soul to lobbies and big companies, in promise to repay favours while in office. This totally sucks. Being a politician should be a vocation. People who want to lead for the greater good of their nation.
