I haven't thought about it before, but this thread made me think. There are a lot of parallels between my job and my activities here on CC. In my job we spend an awful lot of time (and consequently, an awful lot of taxpayers' money) on things that wouldn't be necessary if people would just behave in a decent manner. For instance, if people would just slow down and use caution in inclement weather, we wouldn't have to dump such exorbitant amounts of salt on the roads in winter. But Johnny Q. Idiot Public thinks he has a "right" (stemming from what? granted by whom?) to drive the speed limit regardless of weather conditions, so to keep Johnny from killing himself we have to rush out and dump megatons of salt on the road to melt every last snowflake in the shortest time possible.

On CC, if people would just follow a few (extremely lenient) rules, treat their opponents with respect, be considerate both in the forums and in the games, a lot of the things I do on CC would be unnecessary.
