I would ask which one is actually practicing their religion? I would say that's the most practical and most simple answer.
And though cahoots and Phx have really good answers, I think that usually the child winds up going with the mother's religion. I think that just assumes that is the mother who is practicing and obviously, she's going to take her child with her.
I'm also wondering if you two couldn't find a "middle ground" church together. Maybe a Lutheran or Anglican church. Possibly even Methodist. Or just look around your neighborhood and find one that seems to have a good children's program.

I will be very, very honest in this, and I hope I don't offend..
This is a very sensitive topic for me. I have been looking at the basic doctorine of Mormons, and I can't say I agree with it at all. I can however say that Titus has the right to believe what he wants, and I will defend that for him.
Just because someone does not agree with the "religion of choice" does not mean the person doesn't have the right to believe in it.
I have to agree - it's usually the mother that takes the child to church, but that doesn't mean the child can't be exposed to both.

Oh! I hope you didn't take my answer to mean that one religion was better than the other or that someone's beliefs should be denied in this situation. I definitely don't believe that.
I agreed with you and cahoots when you said that the child should be exposed to both. I was just giving information that I had heard before.
This is a decision that the parents are going to have to make for themselves. I was just offering various scenarios, possiblities.

I have to agree. Those abortion jokes are tasteless. I'm very sensitive to those sort of jokes and I like to get up on a soapbox whenever someone says something that I don't like. It's primarily because I have no sense of humor but secondarily because I was an aborted fetus when I was younger. I was scared but I didn't cry.
Oh, to answer your question - the child should be Amish.

Hi Aladriel! I'm not taking offense in any way! Really! I meant it more of a "I don't agree in any way what the Mormons believe, but I will defend their right to believe in it".
I'm sorry if it came across otherwise - it was not my intent!

Funniest thing I've read by Boxcutta. Get over it mach, cahoots and Phx.
BUT!
I agree with vtmarik, forcing religion and beliefs on a child at an early age fucks them up for life. It makes everything horribly confusing when you hit 12 or 13 and try to decide what you actually believe. Not the mention the questions of whether it's ethical, as at worst it amounts to brainwashing.

You must not have a television or something.
Watch the commercials, every single member of the church or latter day saints is perfect and happy. Same goes for Catholics, no?

On a funny scale, this would be a 4.

Don't be a jerk. I merely mentioned my dislike...I could have written you a page or two about it. You haven't even begun to see my soapbox.

I am a Mormon, and no I'm not easily offended. I was an athiest for most of my life and was recently baptised in the mormon church. My wife, and all of my children were raised in the mormon church.
It sounds as though Titus might not be that active in the Church, so I would agree, whichever parent is more serious about their church is the one where the child should start off.
Some of the posters have mentioned letting the child choose at some point, and that sounds good, but the Mormon Church is much more than simply a religion, it's more like a culture. Children start socializing in the nursery at age 1 and mostly stick together until they are about 16 or 17. My daughter is just entering the Church University, (BYU), and went to seminary at church at 6:00 a.m. Every school day all through high school. My eleven year old son is now saving money to go on his Mission. It's not a casual thing, but a lifestyle.
I do know several teenagers who have drifted away from the church, but they usually just become less active, and rarely ever change religions.
A couple of the things that I always liked about the Mormon Church even when I was an atheist was that they take care of their own, the men are all straight shooters, and they have the closest, most remarkable families of anyone that I have ever met.
I used to be a 24/7 pothead for over 20 years, and also used to be the manager of a girlie bar...lol I gladly turned away from that lifestyle to embrace the Mormon way of life many years before I actually converted.
I wouldn't force religion on anyone, or any child. But if you are a serious mormon then it would seem unlikely that your child would be anything else. Which of course takes us back to the beginning. Which parent is more serious about their religion, and what would you like your child to get out of religion while they are young?

It was just an assumption...I'm not sure...but I would assume that mormons are against premarital sex, and as Scarus pointed out, being a mormon is a way of life...so they are usually pretty serious about there beliefs.

Dry Mormon
Another common term is a "Dry Mormon", which is what I was for many years. That means that you live the mormon lifestyle, but for one reason or another, you choose not to get baptised. Dry meaning you don't get into the water...lol

thats funny...I like the show big love on HBO. I used to think having more than one wife would be awesome ...after seeing big love i had second thoughts.
Religion is crap. Basically they both believe Christ died for their sins and that he is the only way to heaven....its all the "human " teaching that makes them different...thats where we went wrong...following another man's teaching...rather than just God's.
Just Focus on the basics. THe foundations of both faiths when you strip away all the human interpretations...Love your neighbor as yourself...Love God...and have faith that christ died for you....then let them decide wich church(if either of those) they want to join.
The danger with mormonism...is some of them are VERY serious about never leaving once you join...but i believe they are moving away from that now days...like they are moving away from polygamy...sorry to make such a long post...just started typing and couldn't stop...too lazy to use spell check too.

First of all the show 'Big Love' is not a representation of Mormon life, sure it may contain parodies of mormon beliefs, but these demean and distort the beliefs of the Church. And Mormons are not "moving away from polygamy", it was discontinued in 1890. Get your facts right.
