There is strategy involved in 1v1s and there are different tactics that can be employed when playing in them. Different game settings and maps should alter your style of play, unless you're clueless, which you seem to be. In some maps there is very little advantage to going first, no difference than going first in other games. And dice affect the outcome of a game no matter how many players there are.

The main downside to 1v1's is the few points that comes with victory.
