The colorblind issue

Post by GreenfireStorm »

Ok, I know its been brought up a lot, but today when I played Europe for the first time I could NOT tell red and green apart. This pretty much screwed me over, as I made a bunch of tactical errors thinking I had contiguous countries.

The main issue I find is the blue(3rd player) and Pink(6th player) are basically the same for me, if I don't have 2 next to each other to compare, then I can't tell them apart. When I'm one of these colors it's not as bad because I use the fortify list to verify, but with other players it becomes a real pain when someone gets a bonus I didn't know they had.

Now I know this isn't a priority, but I've had to adjust, I avoid 6 player games, makes my life a hell during the first round before I get accustomed to the sides etc.

I'm not sure if someone can think of something, but what I'd like to see done with the colors is as follows.

1. Change pink to something with more contrast, black comes to mind.
2. Change neutral color to another shade, I have the same issue with the 5th player and neutral colors.
3. On Europe, makethe names plainer, rather than the fancy effects.

OR
I'm not sure what Greasemonkey can do, but it seems like all this can be fixed by adjusting RBG values, maybe Tr0y can help on this.

It feels like the colors have moved from an annoyance to a disadvantage, especially freestyle when time taken for moves can make or break a run.

I'm curious what colors do you propose?

I could possibly change all the player colors to one color and then prefix them w/ like r, g, b, y ect. However, I do not have the power to make slight adjustments to the colors.

or leave the colors and just prefix them like the following.

Also, what do you think about the status icons colors?
Would you prefer them to be shaped like triangle, square, circle?

The map you have there with the prefixes seems to work.
r
g
b
y
?
p
If you can get a screen with all 6 colors I can double check.
If you can do that with colors intact, that would solve the problem I have without changing too much.

As for color suggestions, here goes.
Red - Red
Green - Slightly lighter Green (Not enough to make it look like yellow)
Blue - Blue
Yellow - Yellow
??? - Orange
Pink - Black

THe color changes may not be necessary with the prefixes. Thanks Tr0y!

What map in particular? So I can take a screenshot.

I dont think it would be much of an issue. Even if they did slightly overlap.

If anyone wants to test out the script for the colorblind.

Need greasemonkey and firefox.

troy - that's pretty cool. Fair play to ya.

There's a tool for simulating colour blindness problems for those of us that aren't: http://colorfilter.wickline.org/

Also, there's a Firefox color picker extension, that may be useful:

or if they could develop a special button so the people who are color blind could click it and their map would change

Yep, that's much better!
Many thanks Troy.

Suggestion, how about using different icons instead of colours?
For example: Square, Circle, Triangle, Diamond, Star, Heart?

Just a thought!

I have problems with the blue colour in Asia. I can't see it at all, or very very hard

EDIT: ok, not only in Asia, but everywhere on the Classical map, the blue colour is too dark

Tr0y,
I just tried your colour-blind script and I'm very impressed. Thanks for solving this issue that was buried in my to-do list for too long. I'll recommend your script to anyone who contacts me about colour-blindness.

I think the letters should be a settings option(if possable) as this could clutter some of the maps up
