[24-Mar-2006] Temporary limit of 2 games (outdated)

Post by lackattack »

For several hours Conquer Club was down with a 403 Forbidden message in it's place. My web hosting company shut me down without warning for consuming too many resources (CPU power specifically). They said they'd re-enable my account if I take measures to reduce the load.

Since this is an emergency and there's not much else I can do, I reduced the game limit to 2 for all Free Membership accounts. I hope this helps and they don't shut me down permanently before I have a chance to move the site to a better web server.

To bad, I thought I could relax a bit after that gruelling database server upgrade. I'll post an update when there's news.

I'm just saying, but maybe premium members should have a limit too. Something like 50 games or so. I know the whole point of premium is to get as many games as you want, but if its temporary I'm sure people would understand. I don't know how they even manage to play 100 games at a time. Anyway, I'm not sure if it would make that big of a difference.

i am a premium member and would never consider playing 50 games at a time

i think 10-20 would be a very reasonable limit for premium members

I think it would be good a game limit for premium members, because some people are really abusing, and maybe its related to the server problems. Im now a premium member, but a limit of 20 or 25 would be good, and 5 games for free members.

The problem is, the already premium members paid for unlimited games, so lack shoudnt limit then, but the new premium. It would not be a solution for the problem now, but in 1 year.

you hit the nail on thee head there. he really shouldnt/cant put a limit on premium member games because that is what we purchased. unless perhaps he refunds the money and starts again. although not sure how that would work.

I'd suggest different level types...

free membership allows 3 games at a time

$10 membership allows up to 10 or 15

$20 membership allows up to 25 - 30 (though 10 is all I can handle LOL)

$40 unlimited

That might create more cash flow for ya lack, and help pay for better servers, etc.

I think my players can handle the $10!

first i know i would pay the xtra fee if he raised it. but i am not in school and can afford unlike these collage kids
2nd i will do my part and as of 8:))am saturday will not join a game for a few days or start one i do play alot of games but=== under the membership i am allowed to play as many as i want it is not an abuse to do what is allowed i have an addictive personality - this is better than drugs - but on my own i will cut back to help the site but every game i start fills up quickly peoplr like playing me as much as i like playing!!

Wacicha's got the right idea, and I'm with it. I've got 20 games open right now; I think I'll hold off on joining/starting any new ones until I get down to 10.

Don't be selfish, we've all gotta do our part to keep this site up and running until lack finds a new provider.

...Then we can see how far we can push THAT one....

I agree with Wachica. I will limit my games until the server is up and running but there shouldn't be so many levels of premium. $20 is fair for unlimited but I don't know how people have the time to play more than 10 at a time! Good luck Lack with the new server.

I am premium membership too and I have enough with 10 games. Maybe 20 can be fine (for people with more free time).

Im thinking in a alternative solution. Most people open a lot of games maybe for not stop to play the weekend, for exemple, when they are at house with another thing better to do. I suggest to foment the real time games. Maybe is posible to create another categorie of games: Secuential, Free Style and Real time. At the real time game, we can have 15 or 20 minutes maximum for every turn, instead of 24 hours.

I dont know if this is posible to make, but it could be a way to satisfay players who want to play a lot in a day or in some hours.

What do you think?

I agree with Ayame on the Real Time games...that would definitely go over well. You should consider it lack. I also appreciate what all of you members are doing to help with the server problem. I hope it works out.

In light of this uneventful situation, I, too, have decided to help fight server clogs by cutting down from two games at a time to only one. I hope it helps... *laughing really hard inside* I think premium needs a limit moreso than non-pre. lol I don't know if that was gathered by most or not....... It is quite a predic., though... JEAYUH

If this is an issue of needing more expensive webhosting that can accomodate the traffic that you get here, I would suggest looking for a little extra money through advertisers. I don't think anyone would be opposed to a few banners or sponsorships on this site if it helped to run it more smoothly. Cutting down on the number of games is really going to hurt when trying to attact new players.

This is an emergency situation until he moves to a new provider. Cutting down on the free games is fine, but it doesnt take much brain to figure out premiuim members should also cut down on games. Alot of good suggestions in this thread, but remember that this is only temporary, and that when the game moves to a new provider premium can go back to playing unlimited again.

But for a short time, premium members should cut down on games played so the whole site isent shut down prematurely.

The premiums are playing 100s of games and are the ones taking up all the server space
