1 v 1 unsuitable maps

Post by yorkiepeter »

An issue has come up in my singles league that certain maps should be excluded as they are specialist maps that require some learning. I am talking about the like of pearl harbour and its bombardment features. But then i get people saying that if ph is banned then so too should aom and others with special features such as apocalypse.

I personally would not like to play a tournament game on pearl harbour as i don't understand it, but where do you draw the line?

The only map I really wouldn't want to play is Bamboo Jack. I don't get it at all; the stuff on the side attacks the actual map and vise versa? :?

I think players should be able to pick their home map from any of the available ones, it's not really fair to them if they can't pick their best map (unless you have to pick from a list, not all of the maps in general).

thanks for the reply, you make a good point, but unless you know ph well you aren't going to win and someone choosing that map would then surely have an unfair advantage...after all its so far removed from risk to be another game in its own right.

Well, I think all maps should be able to be picked as home maps. I do however think PH and some other maps (World 2.1 and also most likely Battle for Actium and Bamboo Jack) are not good for 1 vs 1, as the player going first has a to big advantage, because the maps are so big or because players almost always have a bonus at the start for PH.

I have played some 1 vs 1 games on PH and almost all games ended in a victory for the player that started the game.

So I do think the above maps are no good for 1 vs 1, but not because of the features, but because of the size/bonusses.

The fact that you don't know the features is the basis for a home map. It should give an advantage to the player that choses it, as that is the reason for having a home map.

what about doodle earth...it's a 3-4 round race to see who can turn in cards first.

But not if you play it without cards, then it can be a decent game most of the time. My wife and I have played several No Cards/Adjacent Doodle Earth 1 vs 1 games without any problems.

I think that if you want to avoid any confusion then before declaring new season open you should just post which maps are allowed/aren't allowed. Because it is your tourney and you have the right to decide which maps you want to see in them and which not, simple as that :)

And where to draw the line? Well, as Forza AZ said, some maps give clear advantage to the player who starts first (1 territory=1 troops, a lot of territories to give extra troops). Also, biggest maps might take forever to finish so maybe they should be avoided as much as possible.

But otherwise, I would let other maps stay in (though, of course, I'm one of the people who like to pick Crossword as a home map because everybody seems to hate it and haven't played it a lot :P but it's not a hard map  ) because home field advantage should mean that you can play a map that you know very well and others might not be that familiar with that.
