Specifying Players during Game Creation
Hi Folks,
So.. here's an idea for notifying players effectively.
Start a Game screen - You choose all the settings for your map, put in the password, number of players, round title, and choose the tournament.
When you choose a tournament, a text-entry box pops up to the right that takes x lines (where x = number of players) of text entry, (hopefully able to be pasted from excel in a block) which are player names, and assigns those players to that game. (also avail is search by name facility)
Those players are then either sent a pm (if they want to be - in settings) informing them that the game is ready to be joined but will not begin until they go into "waiting for players" and click "join game" - yes, this will automatically put your tournament game into their waiting for players games, and until all players confirm the game won't start. No more crappy game number searching. Join a tourney, get placed in your games.
Marginally more work for us on the game creation front. Zerofication of the work on the pm front, now we can save pm time for actually responding to queries.
On another note, the possibility of a welcome message for tournament games from tournament directors would be nice? Auto-popped into game chat on start.
What do you think?

That would be me, i hate sending pm's...

All you need is usergroups if all you want is usergroups... I'm suggesting something far more than a simple list of names.
It would stop players joining the wrong games. It would eliminate the need for passwords on tournament games, as the players in those games would be specified.
There would be a substitution option available to the tournament director if they needed to change a player before a game started.
There would be the ability to specify which player is on which team, meaning that doubles and triples games would not need to be joined in the right order. If the players were pre-specified you could choose the teams. (I don't necessarily think you should be able to choose the order of players, just the teams/players, although that is another possible future addition)
Most importantly, the games would appear in the "awaiting players" section of your my games, waiting for you to click "confirmed".
This would also allow the creation (FINALLY) of my much dreamed about Need for Speed tournament. As the games could be created, and would stay around with players "sort of" in them, but not ready until both players click join.
Anyway. that's just a few ideas.. Guys. get into this idea. flesh it out. develop it. the more ideas we can bounce around, problems we can think up and fix, the more likely something like this is to get coded. Lets apply all the tournament knowledge in this forum to this problem. Break it apart and see what we come up with

The phpBB3 upgrade will include the ability to send PMs to as many players as you want at once. I know, everyone wants to know when the upgrade will happen, and it will hopefully not be too terribly much longer, but we just have to wait.
This feature is one that will be of a HUGE advantage to the tournament organizers. I've been waiting for it for months and months. Rivals will also help with what you guys are talking about as it will allow you to assign players to certain games, making record keeping a little easier.
This idea is interesting though, so please keep fleshing it out and pounding out the details in the meantime. It could turn into something, you never know.
