then just remove the system bonuses to lower the bonuses.

unless ur opting for him to change some of the system pathways.

Hi all,

What's everyone's idea on how to proceed? I don't want to edit any starlanes, nor move planets around.

I could add another stargate, but I'd rather much with the bonuses instead.

Would the problem be elieviated by gonig back to the original no system bonuses, only planetary bonuses?

that wouldn't solve the problem...the exploit will still be there...adding a gate would be better than making 'no system' bonus

I'll explain, if you have secunda and Bylaris, you only need to defend the secunda star to hold a bonus of
secunda gives 2
Bylaris gives 1
secunda 1,2 and 3 gives 3
secunda 2 gives 2
Bylaris 1 gives 2
Bylaris 3 gives 1
that make a total bonus of 11
if you drop the system bonus you ll get 8...so not a real diffrence...

So a gate on Bylaris? What about a tear or wormhole instead?

What if you adjusted the bonuses to include something along these lines instead:

If you hold a "planet" bonus, without holding the entire system, you get the planet bonus as usual.

If you hold the ENTIRE system, you get a set bonus for the ENTIRE system, but the planet bonus is not added to that.

Then it would become a 1 or the other type of thing. You could make the system bonus +5, but not having the entire system only bring the usual planet bonuses of +1 or +2.

Of course, I'm not sure if that is allowed with the XML or not.

Let's weigh the pro's and cons of each:

Tear on Bylaris 3

Pros - This would connect the weakest combination (Devi/Invey) with the strongest combination (Bylaris/Secunda).

Cons - A) Currently all tears/wormholes are on gas giants (possibly gas reactions create and maintain tear/wormhole?) - this would look strange on a regular planet. B) Would leave only 1 weak system combination (Cylan/Junas). C) Extremely close to the Invey tear.


Wormhole on Bylaris 3

Pros - This would connect the second weakest combination (Cylan/Junas) with the strongest combination (Bylaris/Secunda).

Cons - A) Currently all tears/wormholes are on gas giants (possibly gas reactions create and maintain tear/wormhole?) - this would look strange on a regular planet. B) Would leave only 1 weak system combination (Devi/Invey).


Star gate on Bylaris 3

Pros - Would almost completely balance the board, there would be two weak system combinations (fairly easily defended) and a LOT of strong combinations (moderately defensible, with plenty of attack routes).

Cons - A) All star gates are currently within 1 system of each other. B) Secunda might become a bottleneck. C) Suibor star gate could be moved to Ranara to match, then everything would be all good [except for no longer having a gate at the best place to put the explanatory text] D) Slightly cramped on the small map, but possible. E) Six star gates would make the connected planets/systems extremely difficult to hold (five probably already does that). Is this a bad thing?


Star gate on Secunda 1

If we put a gate there, how about making a +x bonus for holding all gates? Would that help or hinder?

Also: How would people feel about making all the central systems neutral to start (along with all the +0 and +2's)? Kind of a galactic revolution where the core systems start neutral and the outer rim systems are where the players start? And by core I mean the 5 systems with stargates (right now).

As it currently stands - if you hold all 5 gates, you get a plus 8 for the planets holding those gates. The 6th gate would make it +9. I suppose you could have a star gates bonus (+1 for 3 or 4?, + 3 for all 6) as long as you didn't make it too large

I like this idea. What are we identifying as the core systems? Also, are we just talking about the Stars in those systems or the entire system (that's a LOT of neutral terrs)

might wanna rethink ur core system neutral ideas.

most people hate neutrals and the more neutrals there are, teh more it discourages players from takign anything from neutrals if its not necessary. so the big bonus areas with neutrals will most likely be left alone which is redundant then to have them in the first place.

the only feasible solution is more wormholes/space rifts/gates?

im not too sure though.

Looking through the XML stuff, I thought of something else:

If we leave the core systems as neutrals (adn the +0 & +2's) what if controlling the stargates as they are now is a win senario? That way people start in the outer rim areas and fight towards the center for control of the stargates?

Is that something people would be interested in?

Hi All,

Any other thoughts on where to go next?

So far, a stargate on Secunda 1 is suggested and I put out the idea of making all the core systems neutral to begin with and possibly making holding all the stargates a win condition.

I'd like some more comments before doing anything.

If you look at what DiM is doing with Age of Might, you'll see that almost all of his terrs are neutral to start (except the Castles). So, you can definitely do it with the XML.

The biggest thing I see is that the neutral heavy start - especially in the center/core of the map has already been identified for a space map [Colonisation - which may or may not be dead, but that's slightly beside the point]. I'm not against this idea - as I said, I find it interesting.

Apophis,

My preference is just to add a gate to Secunda 1 and add a poll to see if there is interest in continuing this project.

Edit your signature to include a link (to this thread) to the right of the picture.

Make the Poll options (run poll for 10 days):

1) It's ready - I like it, I want to play it
2) Game Play has issues - work those out
3) Graphics has issues - fix those
4) I don't like it

There will always be people who vote for 4 - hopefully an extremely small minority. Same with option 3 [here they need to explain what's wrong].

Option 2, I can see being a stumbling block. If they vote for this, they need to provide possible solutions or give an opinion on the game plays already listed.

If you get enough interest and support for Option 1 [20+ votes, 65% approval] - then you just need to find out from Coleman, Cairnswk, and/or Andy what needs to be done so it can be moved to FF.

i was actually referring to apophis's suggestion of making the capturing of the gates a win scenario.

i know u can start nearly everything on map neutral if u wanted to.

im still not a big fan of heavy neutrals.

You forgot to update the image before doing the poll. You definitely need to put a gate on Secunda 1 - then it will be ready.

Otherwise, it's option 2 where you need to figure out how you want to handle the imbalance of holding Secunda and Bylaris.

Also - try to state when in the thread when the poll will be closing (as I said - it should be for about 10 days, makes it Nov 2 or 3)

EDIT: you need to add the words "(Please explain)" to the I don't like it option

Ok, I've updated the map and I'm going to fix the 1st post. Edited both large and small.

- Added Stargate to Secunda I
- Changed Secunda bonus to +3

Why have you put a "+0 for gas giant planets" in the legend when if it's a +0 it dosen't need to be there anyway?

i dont think its possible to code XML to make just capturing the gates a win scenario.

and personally i dont like that idea at all.

but the map looks great so far.

The +0 for the Gas giants is so he can easily say "all other planets +1." That would be difficult w/o the +0 gas giants comment. Besides the red glow is important.

some of the planets are a little too similar in color and can be confusing for colorblind ppl like me..... i have a hard time with the army colors i dont need it in maps. Otherwise this map looks absolutey a blast to play on. Great job.

Objectives

Optionally, you can specify winning conditions for your map. An objective is a set of territories that when held will give the player an early victory. A map can have several objectives and a held objective ends the game in both Assassin and Terminator games. In the case of a Terminator game points would be earned from all opponents who haven't been terminated. Suppose an objective is to hold both Kamchatka and Alaska. The XML would look like this:
