You're not wrong there. Here's a list of things that have been changed for 'copyright' reasons that cannot be claimed under copyright:

* the map of the world
* the images of a die or dice
* the use of certain ordinary words - attack, fortify, dice, cards, etc
* the use of certain well known place names - siam, iceland, new guinea, etc

From another thread ...

MrBenn wrote:If you haven't seen the site-wide announcement, head this way  viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67126

a) It didn't appear to be an announcement so much as a vote on another interim map
b) Despite the new map getting more votes, Lack decided not to go with it
c) The new map image has been removed from the post, meaning ...
d) Despite saying that the vote is open until Sunday 19 Oct, it is closed already (early Sat 18 my time)
e) The new classic (art) map isn't much of an improvement. Where's the WORLD map?
f) Picasso wasn't a surrealist, he was a cubist

Here is the deal. CC is undeniably stealing the game of Risk. This is quite possibly some sort of copy vio. They are doing what they need to to not get sued.

well duh ....

CC and at least a hundred others have cloned the game.

My point was that those individual elements I listed cannot of themselves be claimed by Hasbro or anyone else to be their sole intellectual property. They may have a case for arguing that the UNIQUE COMBINATION (along with the gameplay) is theirs, which means that a modest degree of modification of some (not necessarily all) of those elements is all that's needed to be 'sufficiently different' under copyright law.

And why now ? Because of money. 2 years ago, lack didn't care (see his quotes in other threads). Now, since the site is worth $, it is a concern. He won't be able to make (and keep) a profit, or sell it , without paying some copyright "dues" through a legal deal.If he wasn''t making money...he wouldn't mind to pushing it to the limit as before!

I still think, the best solution for the whole mess would be to cut a deal with Hasbro and pay them royalties. Among all the rumours flying around in the diverse threads, somebody mentioned one or two gaming websites, that supposedly have such an agreement with Hasbro and can therefore safely & legally offer their members / customers to play the classic / original Risk map.

No matter, what some people don´t get tired to repeat (The game-play is the same, no matter how it looks. There are 100 other maps to play on. Yadda Yadda.), Classic is just that: The classic & original game, that most of us came here to play. It has been the heart-piece of the site, by far the most popular & most played map.

Just look at the uproar in the forum. Sure, part of it is due to the poor way the whole mess was / is handled by the site management. And sure, things will calm down with time. I am convinced however, that the site will lose members / customers, because of it:

There is a significant number of people, who exclusively plays Classic. Some of them might come to terms with a replacement map, if it is a good one. But some will certainly start looking for alternatives. In the last days, I have heard from quite a few regulars (frequent posters in the forum & cross-map-players included), that they have already started to check out other gaming websites. And I admit: I did too.

The greater impact however I expect on newcomers. Many (if not most) of those are finding CC, when searching for options to play online Risk. That´s the way, that I came here. And right now, CC just doesn´t offer that option. If I came to this site for the first time right now and wouldn´t find a classic Risk map to play, I´d certainly continue my search for alternatives.

Just my thoughts ...

Hear hear. My sentiments exactly. Well said.

I'm among those who played the classic map almost exclusively. I can't do that here now, and it's pissing me off. I've gone looking for alternatives and I've found a few that I'm now trying out. All in all I'd rather be here, but not without a classic map to play.

That's how I feel too though I decided maybe it was time to find a chess site to play. After what must be a thousand games on the classic map, I'm so keen for one of my friends to say... "How about a game of Risk?"... but it never seems to happen.

Much more chance of one of my friends pulling out a chess board...

Problem is, I love the classic map and the classic game!!

I find it hard playing on the temporary map because it's so hard to see who's got what territory that I don't even bother looking. I just play towards my goal and ignore what's happening on the board... not exactly a good play.

Anyways, hopefully Lack is simply working out what % of profits he has to pay Hasbro so we can all get on with playing classic like we used to!!

I do reckon if it went to court that it would be a fascinating case to watch... but alas would cost so much money to fight!! The old "how much justice can you afford" thing... not that I'm sure CC is in the right or wrong - it's a lovely shade of grey...!

the new classic map sucks, the arts one is ok its kinda more framiliar feeling but the names r completely screwed up and mean absolutely nothing to me and are annoying. if u ever make a huge change like this atleast tell people in advance, cuz i have 20 games going and i hate this map and dont wanna play on it but refuse to deadbeat and make people wait for me to get knocked out so i am gonna sit out conquerclub until i see a better classic. and i sure as hell am not renewing my premium membership if nothing changes so bye bye money for cc

That's a frighteningly cogent way of describing the situation.

And also mine.

I didn't know that some places out there have such agreement with Hasbro. That probably means that is not so expensive to have such an agreement, and would be the best solution for everybody (Site owners, site customers and also Hasbro).

I also came here looking for places to play Risk online. My first 30 or so games where in a Classic map. Nowadays I don't play Classic that much (I am talking before the replacement appeared) but I would not have arrived here if it wasn't for Classic...

I prefer the classic map too, but I'm learning to the like Europe map (a very fine map that is in some ways superior to classic) and also World 2.1, which is like the classic map on steriods :)
